I'd rank him maybe the best ever heavy that never won a title, odd in such a title rich era as he fought. What he did to John Ruiz and Michael Moorer was beyond any known safety constraints of boxing, and also the first to beat the clever Frez Oquendo on the heels of his strange sleepwalker non-performance against an equally tricky southpaw Chris Byrd. Blasted out Oquendo in the 9th, so something fishy in the Byrd bout me thinks. Knocked the tarballs of King's posterboy Rahman also and gave Ike Ibeabuchi headaches for life that he never recovered from. Got Oleg Maeskav also by KO. Man, they'd make him uncrowned King today with that kind of record. He actually got in some good shots on Lewis, but just couldn't effectively close the distance overall with his 70" reach, one of the shortest in heavy contender history, even the 5'6" Sam Langford having a good 4 inches on him there. He has financial problems, so I'd expect to see him back. Plenty of opponents in the region that would make good fights for him and likely bring him some decent paydays. Got sold out by his trainers in getting him down to 235 for Ustinov when only a few months before he was close to 335. Bad management and like James Kirkland, not smart enough to see through it to something better.
davemurphy
Re: David Tua vs Alexander Ustinov Fight Report Yeah, the changes in management killed David Tua. He had layoffs through out his career that came at points where the title was seemingly his for the taking, or at the very least he could've challenged for it. Amazing that he stayed on the scene so long and only had the one title shot with Lennox to show for it (Byrd was not for a world title).
