David Price to face Chisora next year; Sykes gets Walsh in February

It looks like Dereck Chisora will face David Price for the British heavyweight title next year after the British Boxing Board of Control circular reveals the winning bid by Frank Warren to stage the bout at a date and time to be advised.

It is approaching a year since the belt was last contested. Price stopped Matt Skelton in the second round back in November, but 2013 turned out to be his annus horribilis, suffering back to back stoppage losses to American Tony Thompson. He has since switched trainers to Adam Booth.

In contrast, Chisora’s year has been productive. Despite appearing unmotivated during his 9th round stoppage win over Argentine Hector Alfredo Avila, Del Boy’s stock rose after an impressive stoppage over unbeaten American Malik Scott and then in capturing the European title against Edmund Gerber at the Copper Box in August. Chisora takes on Italian Matteo Modugno (14-0) on November 30 at the same venue.

Dewsbury's Gary Sykes will get his shot for the vacant British super featherweight title when he meets Cromer’s Liam Walsh at the York Hall Bethnal Green on February 22.

Sykes was due to face Stephen Smith next, but following a dispute with former promoter Frank Warren, Smith was forced to vacate. Reigning Commonwealth title holder Walsh is unbeaten in 15, with points wins over Scott Harrison and Joe Murray in his last two fights.

Since losing last years’ Prizefighter lightweights final to Terry Flannigan, Sykes has captured the English belt this year with a win against Kevin Hooper, followed by a defence against Jon Kays.
