Ring Talk
San Francisco, CA- I was mildly surprised to get a note that last week that November 10th was the 30th anniversary of ex-lightweight (135 lb.), welterweight (147), jr. middleweight (154) and future middleweight (160) champ Roberto "Manos De Piedra" Duran challenged then World middleweight champion "Marvelous Marvin" Hagler. Duran's right hand leads popped the Brockton, MA based champion at will. Although I had it close, after 12 rounds of this 15 round battle, then 33 year old Duran was ahead on the scorecards after 12 rounds. Had Duran not been outsized, he would have not have worn down during the championship rounds of 13, 14 & 15. The effort put forth by Duran is what compelled "Sugar Ray" Leonard to come out of retirement to face and out point Hagler in April 1987.
