East Side Boxing Posted October 24, 2013 Share Posted October 24, 2013 (COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – The United States squad won a medal of every color at the 2013 SportAccord World Combat Games this week in St. Petersburg, Russia. 2012 Olympian Queen Underwood (Seattle, Wash.) claimed gold in the multi-sport event with a final round victory over host nation boxer Anastasia Belyakova in the last U.S. bout of tournament action. Olympic bronze medalist Marlen Esparza (Houston, Texas) and male lightweight Cresencio Ramos (San Antonio, Texas) both took silver medals in the major international event. Underwood won her second international gold medal of the year in women’s lightweight action on Thursday night at the Yubileiny Sports Complex in St. Petersburg. She took her first World Combat Games title with a 2-0 victory over Russia’s Belyakova in the lightweight championship contest. Esparza lost a 3-0 decision to Russia’s Olesya Gladkova in the flyweight finale on Thursday evening to take silver in her first World Combat Games. In the men’s lightweight final, Ramos’ bout with Russia’s Viacheslav Shipunov was stopped in the first round due to a cut over his eye, giving the Russian a TKO victory.
