Re: Anthony Joshua: I will shine brighter against tougher opponents

People seemed to judge him on a one round fight, last time out..... way too early to make assessments.

It's easy to judge what flaws need ironing out. Defensively he looked naive on his debut, his shots seemed to lack power and whilst there is something raw there to work with I dare say that he'll need to spend a long time learning his trade.

Yes 1 round is quick to make assessments but some things are glaringly obvious and need work, be it 12 rounds or 15 seconds

Damn right. And I think him being so big and being an olympic champion, people are overhyping him too early-same thing they did with Fraudley.

Colin Hart used to claim that Lennox had no power - in the early days. It must be noted that Lewis made mistakes in the early days and he had taken part in two Olympics. There are adjustments needed from amateur to pro and its hard to tell, how far a fighter can go, with-out adequate time.

A debut fight is going to be full of nervous tension, excitement and one round is not enough to make any real assessment. His trainer can pick-up on any mistakes from that round but it has to be balanced with the occasion that it took place in.

As an Olympian he is going to be over analysed but I think we won't know much until about 6 or 7 fights in. (maybe more)

Agreed, and people need to realise that he needs to walk before he can run but the casual fans won't understand that.

And Colin Hart knows as much about boxing as I do about Bandy (literally the same "They are sports, right?")

A debut might be tense but class shines through, as we saw with Lomachenko, Campbell, Murata....

If you're his trainer you make assessments and tell him what he needs to improve, you work on those flaws and sort them. There was a LOT of them that needed work and he was lucky that Leo was bloody hopeless.

TBF he has had as much as hype as any other Olympic HW Champ has....no more....no less....but as usual you take a dislike for someone without any rhyme or reason to it!

I'm really surprised to see this being brought up so soon. I knew he was getting considerable hype, but didn't realize it was to THAT extent. I don't see how they can avoid rushing him if it's as bad as you guys say.

Dave he is getting no more hype than any other fighter has gone down the Olympic route before him....we just have a member that likes to criticise and snipe for the sake of it!!

Most definitely.....you are depressive about virtually every fighter except your own pocket full of favourites!!

Thats nonsense. But ofc you will never believe anything, its hard to knock some sense into that thick Scouse skull of yours.:tsk: Ever heard of SCEPTICISM? Its allowed to be sceptical about a fighter that is so hyped but hasn't REALLY proven himself yet. I was just questioning his power in that first fight, because he landed MANY solid shots on that Italian and still couldn't get him out until he had completely emptied his arsenal.

Not sure how you can try and compare his debut to that of Lomachenko - the gulf in experience is huge.

Bullshit....you were laying into Joshua before he even fought and then more afterwards because it took him nearly 3 minutes to win....you are a fucking idiot!

Re: Anthony Joshua: I will shine brighter against tougher opponents

Paul Butlin is a journeyman who gives it a go and has done well in some fights against much bigger names - lasted the distance with Jonathan Banks, Edmund Gerber. He was a perfect opponent for a new Professional. Unlikely to cause an upset but willing to have a go.

Anthony Joshua looked composed, sharp and surprisingly quick. Jab was strong and the right hand powerful. I was very impressed with him. This kid has tons of potential.

Kids young, in the embryonic stages-give him time and he will go up the learning curve in his time. Remember when Michael Bentt-a great amateur got stopped on his pro debut? That ain't happening here. Joshua will need to sit on his punches more as he learns about leverage and fluidity.Way too soon to judge him. Overall-I like what i see so far.

Well said. I think it's a matter of time, if people will just wait and give him time to develop. But there will be the usual crowd that will be wanting him to fight a Klitschko in his fourth fight :) We need to focus more on HOW he's fighting and not so much WHO he is. Deontay Wilder is still making fundamental mistakes after five years and 30+ opponents. I'm not saying give Joshua THAT ridiculous amount of time to start looking good, but don't nitpick that he's not perfectly sound fundamentally in his debut, is that not to be expected?
