Amir Khan vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr: Could King Khan Have a Chance of a Lifetime?

By

British WBA junior welterweight champ Amir Khan wants to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. Normally, I would say get in line behind every other boxer in or around the welterweight division, but does Khan (23-1, 17 KOs) actually have a legitimate shot?

According to BoxingScene.com, Khan is confident that if he is given a shot against undefeated Mayweather he will emerge victorious.

Khan emphasized that "styles make fights" and he believes that Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs) has never boxed a fighter with his speed.

Although Khan's impressive hand speed has been noted fight after fight, he is more renowned for his devastating power. Khan has knocked out approximately 70 percent of his opponents, including three of his five most recent opponents.

Khan is currently sparring with Manny Pacquiao in the Philippines, before his fight with Marco Maidana (29-1, 27 KOs) December 11.

Despite Khan's upcoming bout with Maidana, he hasn't stopped expressing his interest in fighting Mayweather in England.

“I always said I wanted a big fight in England,” Khan told The Manchester Evening News. “I want to bring the big fights back to this country. The Floyd Mayweather fight would be one of those. I wanted to fight Maidana in the UK, but he wanted to fight in America. It wasn’t my decision, but I know my true fans are over here and I will come back after this one. The Mayweather fight could definitely happen in England."

HBO footage displaying Khan's swift hands and pulverizing punches in his victory over Paulie Malignaggi.

Khan's promoter, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, has also said he is interested in putting together a Khan-Mayweather fight by the end of 2011.

The only issue surrounding a potential fight between the two boxers is Mayweather's legal issues that arose after an alleged physical altercation between him and the mother of his three children. Now, Mayweather faces three harassment charges along with a misdemeanor domestic battery indictment.

In other words, for now Mayweather will be throwing rebuttals in a courtroom before he throws any punches in the ring with anybody.

Nevertheless, Khan is still enthusiastic about his chance with the man that many consider the best active boxer in the sport.

“After he fought Ricky Hatton he said he wanted to fight over here and I am the only British fighter of the caliber to take him on. We could bring it to the UK and it would be massive. That fight could fill anywhere.”

Khan's "devastating power"....

"Marco" Maidana...

"King Khan"...

Enough said.

If Khan was fortunate enough to come through both Maidana and the Bradley vs Alexander winner (which is a huge enough ask as it is) AND landed a Floyd fight ahead of many many other prospective challengers, who perhaps have more legitimacy...there is a 1 in a million chance of it happening in the UK, and an even lower chance still of Khan emerging victorious.

It's nice to dream though.
