David Price ready to take on the best after beating Raman Sukhaterin

Oct 18 2010

by Philip Kirkbride, Liverpool Echo

DAVID PRICE believes he issued a statement of intent after becoming the first man to halt Raman Sukhaterin.

The Liverpool heavyweight says his seventh round TKO win over the tough Belarusian at The Troxy in London on Saturday night was the display he has been threatening since he turned over last year.

Moving his professional slate to 8-0, Price is ready to tackle the biggest names in the domestic division but will have to wait until the start of 2011 before given the chance to improve his record against higher calibre opponents.

In the meantime, 2008 Olympic medallist Price will test himself in sparring sessions with British and Commonwealth ruler Derek Chisora as the Londoner prepares to take on world champion Wladimir Klitschko in December.

“I just broke the lad down and finished the job in the seventh round,” said Price.

“I took my time because he is a durable fighter who has been in with some good names, so I knew it was going to be tough. But I could see it in his face that he was starting to wilt. I was just boxing patiently and then showed aggression in little bursts.

“Everyone was happy with my performance and I think I’ve sent a message out with the win. His manager said before the fight he felt there was no way we would stop him. I now just want to keep the ball rolling and though I would have liked to have been out again before Christmas, I will just do what Frank Maloney (promoter) wants me to do.

“I had a bit of a walk in round five but in rounds six and seven put my foot on the gas. I just steeped it up and the referee was forced to step in and end it.

“Frank was happy with my performance and everyone who came to watch said the same. The Sky TV people were pleased as well and said it is the best they have seen me so far.

“That was my first scheduled eight round fight and I felt good. Me and my trainer Franny Smith don’t leave anything to chance – we are completely professional in our preparations.

“I would like to think the next fight would be a 12 rounder, there is little point in going for 10 because you may as well put the work in to go the extra two rounds, but it will probably be another eight rounder.

“I’ll take the next two weeks off because I’m not fighting again until January. I’m a little disappointed not to be out again before Christmas.”
