East Side Boxing Posted October 14, 2013 Share Posted October 14, 2013 (COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – American flyweight Malik Jackson (Washington, D.C.) opened the 2013 Elite Men’s World Championships in style for the United States squad on Monday in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The 19-year-old competed in the first bout of the entire tournament on Monday afternoon at the Boluan Sholak Cultural & Sports Palace. Jackson opened tournament action in a bout with Angola’s Vilvaldo Rodrigues in Monday’s preliminary round competition. He showcased his intentions early in his World Championships debut, taking a TKO win over Rodrigues at the 1:07 mark of the second round. Jackson will face a stiff test in his second round bout in Almaty, taking on reigning World Champion and the top ranked flyweight in the world, Andrew Selby of Wales on Friday. Lightweight Kenneth Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill.) and light welterweight Jose Alday (Odessa, Texas) will both compete in Tuesday’s World Championships action in Almaty. Alday will take the ring first in the sixth bout of the afternoon session for a contest with Guinea’s Mamadov Keita at approximately 1:30 a.m. ET (3:30 p.m. local time).
