Shaw inks 154lb prospect

Gary Shaw announced today the signing of undefeated junior middleweight prospect and former U.S. amateur standout Julian Williams (2-0, 2 KOs). “He is the goods. He is 100% the goods,” said Shaw. Added veteran matchmaker John Beninati, “Julian reminds me of a better version of Andre Berto. He has a more powerful punch. He’s got all the tools.” Williams, 20, is scheduled to fight two more times this year, November 9 in Oklahoma City and December 3 at Chumash Casino Resort. Williams’ corner includes mentor/head trainer Kenny Mason and advisor/assistant trainer Stephen “Breadman” Edwards. He trains at the James Shuler Memorial Boxing Gym in Philadelphia.

Don't let the hype from Shaw fool you, Williams is a pretty decent prospect but he's not destined to greatness IMO. Slick moves but he'll face a lot of guys who have better when he graduates to the top level, and I don't think he's got the power to be truely special, even though at just 20 then it might come around. I think he probably made a better Am than he will a Pro, and it wasn't like he was really accomplishing a lot there, he lost at most of the top tourneys I saw him in. Record was 75-10, and most of the ten were after he got out of the Junior Golden Gloves and Jr Olympics and started facing the best.

Of course, I expect him to whizz through his first 20 setups and probably be ranked before any problems arise grin//
