WelshDevilRob
The big man got his first win under his belt against Italian Emanuele Leo. Official result TKO 1st. The_budweiser
Re: Anthony Joshua - what did you make of his debut? Not sure what to think, yes the Italian was 8-0 but he was a technically terrible and his body was like jelly. I was impressed with Joshuas body, he looks like he can bang. But can he take a punch? Skav
Re: Anthony Joshua - what did you make of his debut? Joshua has good hand speed but not sure if he has concussive power and looks more like a volume puncher.

I know it was so damn short that it was really hard to tell, but despite how great he looked, I thought I saw a flaw or two in the defense that they need to work on. Needs to keep his hands up and move his head a little better, this 8-0 Italian that had been inactive wasn't going to exploit either, but someone down the line definitely will. For such an accomplished Amateur, I was a bit surprised by that, but then again maybe it was just a case of where he knew what he had in front of him and was going "bombs away" to try to impress in his debut. poztin
Re: Anthony Joshua - what did you make of his debut? Dave, I'm not so sure he's even such an accomplished amateur. With such few fights he didn't have an extensive amateur career, and his gifted gold medal is a false basis for his amateur achievements. Saying that he looked a lot more fluid in this debut than I recall from the Olympics. But needs to learn to keep that chin tucked in and fast because he left it hung out to dry. He'll get away with it against these early bums, but it'll catch up with him eventually.

iamasadlittleboy
Re: Anthony Joshua - what did you make of his debut? Awful. There were some positives, including nice hand speed, but on the whole he left me wondering whether he's the next Audley, or whether he'll even get that far. His power just doesn't look to be there. Some on boxrec are slating me for saying that but he landed so many clean shots that it was shocking Leo didn't go down from any of them on their own. His defense needs so much work it's unreal and the fact he leaves his chin in the air worries me even more than just the visible defensively flaws. I'm afraid that when you are gift wrapped a gold medal at the Olympics then you are going to be hyped to kingdom come on your professional debut, unfortunately for "The future people's champions", he couldn't really live up to the hype. I've heard lots of people asking what I'd have done. I'd have had him in with a known journeyman, someone like Moses Matovu and further down the card (let Quigg/Salinas be the main). Moses is tough, durable and knows how to survive, he has already been the distance twice (4 rounds in both) with young Hughie Fury and a stoppage over him wouldn't be expected HOWEVER if it came it would give them something to talk about. Instead we got Joshua beating a fat, clumsy Italian who's unbeaten record wasn't worth the paper it was written on.

Lmao.:mlol: Thats right, Audley had the power at least! :tongue1: He might become known as the "poor man's Audley"! Must be the WORST kind of epiteth anyone can deserve. To be honest, I didn't know what his level of amateur experience was, only that he'd won a Gold Medal and that usually goes with a rather extensive am career. However if it's limited like you say, then maybe these things really CAN BE worked out and polished away and aren't permanent flaws. If he was fighting like that after a hundred or two hundred Am fights, then it'd be hopeless. Your info is actually GOOD news.

He was a late starter at 18, and has an amateur record of 34-3 I believe (that includes his ropey Olympic decisions). You have a point, although I'd feel a lot more optimistic if he had a hundred or two amateur fights and didn't have those glaring weaknesses! Hmm, not a whole lot more amateur experience than Deontay Wilder, who we all know has been brought along at a snails pace as a Pro. I think they'll move him faster than that (it would be impossible not to :heh: ), but then he won Gold and not just a Bronze, so the pressure to get the cart in front of the horse will be intensified. I missed the interview, did he sound like another Audley and just expect to be a World Champion as though it were a right-of-passage or did he sound pretty grounded? poztin
Re: Anthony Joshua - what did you make of his debut? To be fair he does seem like a genuinely nice kid and is quite level headed. Spoke about it being a long road ahead and there is plenty to work on. But never underestimate the impatience of the general British public! My social media feeds were already blasting the level of opposition after Saturday night. The fact he won gold and he's topping the bill so early in his career will work against him in terms of the pressure from the public.
