Re: How did Cotto look against Rodriguez?

I just watched the fight here: http://ringnews24.com/boxingforum/showthread.php?49867-2013-10-05-Miguel-Cotto-vs-Delvin-Rodriguez-HBO#.UlHIcFBJMmk

Cotto, now trained by Freddy Roach looked all business and put in a dominant, hungry performance.

Plenty of body shots and it was good to see an aggressive Cotto. Rodriguez, isn't an Elite fighter but he is World level. He was brushed aside by Cotto and that was the type of performance that keeps the fans happy.

Not quite sure where Miguel goes next - maybe Canelo?

He looked good, I think he can beat Alvarez. I wasn't convinced he was done after the Trout fight. He landed left hooks on him all night and couldn't budge him, plus Trout is underrated. Martinez is another interesting match up but the Argentinian has that elusive style to frustrate Cotto.

On what basis is Rodriguez world level? He lost to Theophane, who is basically a British-level fighter.

In my World ;)

He has held the USBA title, contended for a World title (twice) and has beaten some decent names. I suppose he could be classed as a fringe contender, on a World level.

I thought he looked good, especially in going to the body, he was REALLY laying those hard body shots in there, but in the end I think Gav raises a pretty good point that this was Delvin Rodriguez and NOT a Canelo Alvarez he was in the Ring with. Delvin is without question, kind of the "best of the rest" when it comes to the elite of the JMW division, but let's not confuse him WITH one of the elite. Quite simply Delvin doesn't have the fire power to keep Cotto off of him, a Canelo Alvarez (IMO) DOES and I'd rather see Canelo in against Trout again than I would want to see Cotto taking on Canelo or having a rematch with Trout. Yes, he looked good under Roach, but this isn't a "new Miguel Cotto" and let's not rush him to the head-of-the-line just for dominating a ESPN-lifer in Delvin.

I agree, Martinez would be moving and a lot hard to pound to the body and corner like Delvin was. I would rather see Trout or Canelo in line ahead of Cotto in terms of big-money fights, and Trout's earned that by already beating Cotto, but Cotto sells tickets and from a $$$ standpoint then he'll probably get pushed ahead of Austin, especially in HBO's thinking. I think more importantly than Roach being in his corner is his return to Top Rank, who can pull some strings and work wonders with last nights performance......but of course, there's little chance that a Top Rank Cotto and a Golden Boy Canelo are likely to meet. Does anyone know how many more fights Canelo has on his Golden Boy deal?

Actually, he looked so good that im starting to suspect he's on something illegal. I mean, he's with ROACH now. You never can be sure with that guy around. But I hope he isn't juicing coz I really liked Miguel always, as a fighter and person and that would seriously ruin his legacy.

I suppose with the Showtime/HBO divide it is a case of who promotes who and which fights are realistic.

Sergio is a Middleweight, so will Cotto really go up - he doesn't seem big enough.

Rob-

What I'm seeing discussed today is talking about a catchweight of 158 pounds. Here you go:

After Miguel Cotto’s devastating third round KO over Delvin Rodriguez Saturday night in Orlando, the name of WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez was prominently mentioned as possibly being Cotto’s next opponent. “The added value of being the first Puerto Rican to achieve a world title in four different weight divisions is something attractive to me,” Cotto admitted. “In due time, I’ll sit with my group and with Freddie (Roach) and we’ll weigh the options and discuss Martinez and other candidates.” Should the fight be made, Roach stated that he knows how to beat Martinez and he thinks he has “the right guy to do it this time.”

A response from the Martinez camp wasn’t long in coming. Sampson Lewkowicz, advisor to Martinez, tweeted that Maravilla is willing to fight Miguel Cotto at a catchweight of 158 lbs with his WBC belt on the line.

With his knees? Are you sure?

That's a good point, he's injured it two fights in a row now, why not a third? I was kind of just assuming his mobility. A stationary, immobile SM and toss in the hand injury, also a repeat problem the last two fights, and I can see some intrigue, even though I still don't believe Cotto did much the other night other than outclass a ESPN-lifer.
