Chavez Jr. Returns and Scores Highly Controversial Decision over Vera

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. certainly has a penchant for the dramatic, and while he scored a highly controversial unanimous decision victory over Brian Vera tonight, he did nothing to repair his tattered image.

The 27-year-old former middleweight champion had the heavier hands, but was reduced to throwing no more than one or two shots at a time. His conditioning was clearly an issue, and he appeared to be clearly outworked by the underdog Vera during large segments of the bout.

When the decision was announced, the once pro-Chavez crowd booed lustily.

Scores were 96-94, 97-93 and 98-92, all in favor of Chavez Jr.

Vera, who entered a clear underdog and was billed as little more than a comeback opponent, was the aggressor throughout. He constantly backed the clearly larger Chavez back, and troubled him with his high work rate.

He out-threw Chavez nearly two-to-one in punches, and landed over 50 more than his opponent according to CompuBox statistics.
