davemurphy
For a sport that's supposedly dying, if you believe the naysayers, it's still pretty fascinating that you can draw over 12,000 people to an event where all someone is doing is getting weighed on a scale. Say what you want about our sport, but when it's at it's best, it can still push everything else to the side and be center stage in a crowded sportsworld. Take that, Critics, we're still here!!! Ton
Re: It's STILL got it...... Was a good article on the BBC website about how Mayweather is such a huge draw. Basically says he plays the villain brilliantly, divides american's and the african american community particularly in half, and his misdemeanors enhance his appeal. And yet he is not exactly an exciting fighter. One for the purists maybe. He's mastered the art of "hit and do not get hit" but it's not really the style to turn on a casual viewer to the sport. That being said, the numbers he generates in terms on PPV buys and especial his purses are unmatched. He's going to be the highest earning sportsman on the planet again, just for 2 fights earning at least £49mill. In the UK we are astounded and sickened by the amount of money footballers are on a week....but it's peanuts compared to Mayweather's earnings! Finally the piece alluded to the fact that he probably is the ONLY world superstar of the sport and will possibly be the last. Other's being the likes of Ali, Tyson and Lennox...all heavyweights! It's a valid arguement that boxing "still has it" when you use Mayweather as the example. But let's be honest, he is the ONLY example right now. Personally, I have switched off boxing over the past 2-3 years. Before that I loved to watch boxing every weekend, and stay up late for the American cards. But I got turned off by all the shite that dominates the sport. If it's turning off a fairly "hardcore" fan, I'm not sure if it has the ability to grip any new spectators to become dedicated fans. Boxing will never die, despite the rise of MMA etc. It'll always have a fanbase, and I'm sure we'll go full circle and there are some exciting superstars in the making and not too far away. But there are a lot of wrongs to right within the sports beyond the actual competitors.

Skav
Re: It's STILL got it...... I am currently reading the book 'Liston & Ali - The ugly bear and the boy who would be king' and in it Clay said that the public thought boxing was dying back in the early 1960's because the heavyweight division lacked someone special. I was shocked to read that because I have just learned that people have written off the sport for decades, even before the likes of Ali and Leonard came along. Boxing will always produce great results when it puts on a good fight or/and when it has a fighter like a Tyson or Ali that comes along. I'm not sure, I was there and I recall that they only had half of the arena open for that weigh-in but it was packed.

We'll see if we get honest answers on the PPVs, but it looks like Showtime is available through TimeWarner for this fight in my community, a big upgrade from when Tyson was fighting. It appears the broadcasters kissed and made up.

Schaeffer said yesterday that they're still counting the numbers, but apparently is the highest grossing PPV of All-Time even if didn't reach DLH-PBF's 2.5 Million and that it at least topped 2 Million. http://ringtv.craveonline.com/blog/180911-schaefer-mayweather-alvarez-to-pass-gross-record-two-million-ppv-buys
LondonRingRules
Re: It's STILL got it...... Do we know the official PPV numbers, in the US? --- Not official yet, but looks like Showtime is willing to publish the numbers this time after the Guerrero fiasco. Seems to be the only thing important in American boxing these days, Floydy PPV numbers and getting CJ Ross carted out of the country on a pike. In the Oh Brother, be still my beating heart category, gotta love this per fightnews: http://www.fightnews.com/Boxing/nsac-to-make-changes-in-judge-selection-procedure-starting-with-bradley-marquez-fight-226667 Nevada State Athletic Commission Chairman Bill Brady says there will be more NSAC scrutiny of officials assigned to high profile fights, starting with the officials working the October 12 clash between Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas. “There will be more questions asked, and Keith [Kizer] will be held accountable for his recommendations,” he told the Las Vegas Review Journal. “We won’t be a rubber stamp anymore.” Brady also told the paper he has apologized to Nevada Governor Rick Sandoval for any embarrassment to the State caused by controversial the Mayweather-Alvarez scorecard submitted by Commission-appointed judge C.J. Ross, who is now taking an indefinite leave of absence and unlikely to return. Brady said Sandoval expressed his concerns and informed him he “wants things done right.”
