http://ringnews24.com/images/pixel.gifDenkaosan Kaovichit (62-3-1, 26 KOs) defeated Nobuo Nashiro (19-6-1, 13 KOs) via a split decision (113-115.5, 116-113.5, 116.5-114.5) on Tuesday to claim the vacant WBA Interim Super Flyweight Championship.

The 12-round bout took place at the Suranaree University of Technology in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on Tuesday, and was a genuinely thrilling in-ring battle.

Former WBA champion Kaovichit came out fast and brought the fight right to Nashiro. The eventual winner opened up a serious cut over the right eye of his challenger in the third round that bled and swelled up throughout the fight.

Despite the damage, it was Nashiro that finished the bout strongest.

Kaovichit won several of the opening rounds using his quick hands and aggressive style, but the forward-moving technique caused the veteran to lose his momentum and slow dramatically in the closing rounds.

http://ringnews24.com/images/pixel.gifThe lack of conditioning for Kaovichit afforded Nashiro the chance to make a comeback on the judge’s scorecards, and the challenger was clearly the more dominant fighter in the second half of the bout.

Nashiro saw his chances of taking home the title slipping away again (three previous title shots all ended in defeat), and made the last two rounds of this fight intriguing. While this was a close bout that could have gone either way, Kaovichit deserved the victory for dominating the larger portion of the battle.

This super flyweight championship fight was postponed for over a week while Kaovichit battled an illness—this could have been one of the reasons his conditioning was so lackluster in the waning rounds—but the more experienced fighter did enough on the scorecards to warrant the win.

Being a champion is about surviving at times as much as it is about brawling and grinding to a victory. Kaovichit proved his ability in the ring and was able to take home the WBA Interim Super Flyweight Championship.
