RIP Tommy Morrison

Was recently a story on Ringnews24 that the "Duke" was very ill.

It has been reported and confirmed that the boxer has passed away, at the age of 44. The cause of death was respiratory and metabolic acidosis and multiple organ failure.

I personally thought he was a very good fighter and he captured the WBO Heavyweight title. He also starred in Rocky 5. He was diagnosed with HIV after the loss to Lennox Lewis but always denied that he had the disease.

Re: RIP Tommy Morrison

Always sad when anybody dies, and this is no exception, even if he was a purveyor of blatant lies regarding HIV and its testing. I hoped for his sake he didn't have HIV, but Guillain-Barre Syndrome is not to be messed with either.

Hardly seen any of his fights, but I know he was regarded as a pretty exciting fighter.

Re: RIP Tommy Morrison

First saw the Duke take out Art Tucker-after that i was on him like a harbour shark. From the brutal Mercer loss, he came back well, beating Hipp in a absolute war, Truth Williams, Foreman. The fight with Ross Puritty was good too, as was the Ruddock one. RIP Champ, may you find peace.

Yea the Ruddock fight was a classic war-and ko. Don't think everyone was expecting Tommy to win that, after that Puritty draw. But he came back from a kd to put Razor away with the help of that fantastic left hook...sigh. I'll miss him. Wonder if we'll ever again see such a good white American hw...probably not.

Re: RIP Tommy Morrison

..wasn't there a picture released of him last week, and posted on this very site, of him looking fit and healthy punch a speed ball?

--- No, that was him photoshopped on your svelte form looking invincible.

The poor guy has looked like a mangled cartoon forever since his diagnosis. Hopefully he'll get some good fights in Valhalla in his healthy form against the greats he wanted to emulate.

Yeah, those articles posted by that same writer, Darren Bascomb or something like that, to all the boxing sites looks patently ridiculous now.

Re: RIP Tommy Morrison

This is the guy that denied his illness and put opponents at risk whilst he knew what he was carrying....I'm struggling to say RIP

To be fair, he may have been telling the truth and not have been suffering from HIV, we can't be sure. However, his mother apparently told ESPN that he was dying of AIDS a few weeks ago, so it does seem likely.

Regardless, it sounds like he had a pretty horrendous last few years, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

I wouldn't wish it upon him either, but the denial is fine if it only affects you, but potentially he fucked up another life by his persistence at trying to fight when he knew there was a grave risk he could infect someone else.....and its pretty clear that's what he had!
