Malik Scott : "I am the best heavyweight in the world on my worst day"

by Frank Stea

Malik Scott is product of the historic city of Philadelphia. It's the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. Most importantly it is birthplace of the United States of America. In Malik's case, the profession he chose doesn't link him to that part of Philadelphia's history. Malik Scott was born and raised in North Philly. A place where the odds of becoming successful are compared to the odds of becoming President of the United States. It is also a place where a young black male's life expectancy stops at the age of 19. In Malik's case, he is a professional heavyweight boxer who beat the odds of such a hard struggle.

Malik Scott is currently one of the premier heavyweights in boxing right now. Touting a record of 32 wins with no losses or draws. He had one of the most impressive amateur careers as well. Malik's rise hasn't been easy but the heavyweight contender won't let that stop him from becoming the heavyweight champion of the world. Recently on ATG Radio, Frank Stea, Alex Lopez, and Shawn Rapha interviewed the undefeated fighter who goes by the nickname "King". In the interview Malik expressed his displeasure on his current contractual situation that has kept him from fighting for over a year. "I believe I am the best heavyweight in the world on my worst day" " Ain't no numbers in between my numbers and I'm daring any heavyweight in the world to put numbers in between my numbers" said a charasmatic Scott. "I watch some of these so called world champions and contenders put on disgraceful performances. Where are the american heavyweights? I just want my turn." Malik also stated that the american heavyweights aren't fighting each other and that is one of the reasons the division is struggling here in the United States. "I look at somebody like Kevin Johnson, what has he done? Who has he beat to get a title shot before me?" expressed Scott.

With an impressive record of 32-0, how can this fighter especially in the heavyweight divsion be overlooked? Currently he is in a long battle with his current promoter Goosen/Tutor. The contract situation has been a mystery to Malik since day one. Such a contract that is preventing him from making a living in his chosen profession and providing for his family. Malik is currently training in both California and Philadelphia waiting for his call to the big stage. Also, Malik is trying out for movie and commercial roles in Hollywood. When will the King be able to take his rightful throne??? I personally hope soon. For more information on Malik Scott, you can contact him via Facebook. Just got this from his wikipedia page:

he took a big step up in early 2007 and defeated former contender Charles Shufford.

When Charles Shufford is regarded as a "big step up" after a six and a half year career then you know you career has been a waste.

He's from Philly and wears a New York Yankees cap. You'd think he'd have a Philadelphia Phillies cap on wouldn't you? Obviously he's not the brightest spark in the box, he seems not to know where the camera is either. Perhaps he should spend his time trying to knock people out rather than covering himself from head-to-toe in felt-tip pen. He sounds a bit like America's answer to Audley if you ask me.

I wonder if he does actually know his arse from his elbow?

--------- To be fair, none of us really knows his story, but we know how the contractual disputes play out with King fighters being off for years. Just think about Guillermo Jones, the WBA cruiser champ since 08 with 0 title defenses or even fights.

Maidana has his dispute going. Here's Scott finishing as a 10-0, 6 KO prospect up against a solid 13-6 journeyman, a damn sight more impressive than anything Deontay Wilder will produce in the next 2 yrs, I promise you.

So, there is some natural physical potential there, but what hasn't been tested in the mental fortitude. Belonged to boxrec briefly back before my computer crashed and burned knocking me off line for a spell, and I seem to recall him trolling the current scene looking for bouts to fight.

Maybe he POed the Goosens so badly they put him on the shelf to dry up, I don't know, but most fighters would put up a fight and get a new promoter. Even if he only got to Arreola/Cunningham level, that's decent money coming in.

Awesome story. LOL. I know Malik personally and he's a phenomenal boxer. He can very possibly beat any of the top heavyweights but with his inactivity, it won't be easy. As his friend, I hope he gets at least two or three more fights against guy in the top 10 or 15. It's possible!! I'm originally from Philly so I gotta root for my hometown boy

He looks pretty good in that fight, only 21 at the time. I looked at a few of his videos and he seems a decent enough guy and a good talker.

I hope he gets some fights soon to at least restart his career. Theres not alot of US Heavyweights about, so someone should really be pushing this guy now instead of leaving him on the sidelines.

71 David Rodriguez 33(31)-0(0)-0 32yr

106 Joe Hanks 13(9)-0(0)-0 27yr

158 Mike Wilson 4(3)-0(0)-0 27yr

175 Maurice Byarm 6(4)-0(0)-0 27yr

177 Darlington Agha 2(2)-0(0)-0 27yr

183 Kelvin Price 7(4)-0(0)-0 34yr

199 Charles Ellis 6(5)-0(0)-1 35 yr

Unranked because of inactivity:

Malik Scott 32(11)-0(0)-0 29yr

JD Chapman The Natural 29(26)-0(0)-0 27yr

I believe Chapman made it to the boxrec top 15-20, and Rodriguez made it to 25th at one point and maybe Scott too. Less than a thimbleful of ambition for the whole bunch it appears.

Garrett Simon 4-0 (3)

Boxrec list him as a Cruiser, his promoter (Banner) call him a Heavyweight
