Andre Berto Willing To Move Up For Miguel Cotto Clash

By Rick Reeno

WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto is looking for a big fight, and he's ready to take some chances to get it. A few weeks back, Berto's promoter Lou DiBella advised BoxingScene.com that his fighter was willing to move down a couple of pounds to face any of top guys at 140-pounds.

The money at 147-pounds has dried up. Shane Mosley is taking some time off. Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao are interested in each other.

Berto watched Miguel Cotto's victory over Yuri Foreman to capture the WBA junior middleweight title this past Saturday at Yankee Stadium in New York. Cotto is not a big junior welterweight. Most of the top guys at 154-pounds will give him a lot of problems. Following the Foreman win, Cotto acknowledged the possibility of moving back to welterweight.

DiBella tells BoxingScene that Berto is willing to move up a few pounds to 154 - if a fight with Cotto is available.

"Andre Berto would move up to 154-pounds, for a fight with Miguel Cotto. Berto would move down a few pounds to fight any of the names at 140 and he would move up up a few pounds for a fight with Cotto," DiBella told BoxingScene.com.

Great match-up if it does and it could be done for both belts I suppose. I really think the styles would make for a great, close fight.

Can that happen? I'm never sure on those sorts of things but last time it happened was it not LaLonde v SRL in a joke of a contest?

Lalonde fight was only regarded as a joke after SRL battered him. He seemed to be hyped up alot before the match-up.

I suppose its across governing bodies (WBA and WBC), so likely not to happen. WBC could even throw in there 'Diamond belt' mlol/

I'll admit I was about 6 months old but wasn't it seen as a joke making a light heavy champion come in at 168?

It is used against Leonard that Lalonde had to comedown. According to Boxrec he weight 167lbs so made it comfortably. The scores were pretty close though Leonard was his usual vicious self when ending the bout.

Haye made 198 when fighting Enzo yet had complained at making 200 for years...*playing devils advocate with this post*

Lalonde had a choice, no one forced him to take the fight. I don't remember him making an issue of the weight anyway.

Pay someone enough and theyll agree to anything ;-)

Though still cant think of any multiple weight titles on the line in one fight

Haye was fighting guys at his own weight unlike Lalonde who was fighting a blown up Welterweight. True, Haye struggled to stay at the weight but he was meeting Mormeck and Enzo from his own weight class unlike Lalonde.

I still don't see where your point is? Money - Is upto Lalonde whether he feels he can win the fight over a blown-up, not very tall Welter. ;)
