Aydin v Ionut write up (spoilers)

Recommended Posts

Although 5th June 2010 will be remembered for the Yuri Foreman v Miguel Cotto fight in Yankee Stadium Europe hosted one of the most interesting fights on paper. Canadian based Romanian Ionut Dan Ion (referred to throughout this as Jo Jo Dan) went in search of the stupidly named WBC Silver Welterweight Title and in turn entered the lair of Selcuk Aydin, the fearsome fighter who was better known as “Mini Tyson”. The records going in saw both fighters with 100% wins (Aydin was 19-0 with 14KO's whilst Dan was 26-0 with 14 stoppages) though one man was going to come out with a loss in a fight that may well be the most important one ever held in Aydin's homeland. With a packed Abdi Ipekci Spor Salonub (in Istanbul) it was obvious the draw the the exciting Aydin brought in the land of his birth (though he's now based in Germany) with the crowd showing who they were behind straight from the introductions.

Dan was obviously starting the fight as the boxer, on his feet with lots of movement and a fast jab whilst Aydin looked much more muscular and thicker built. It was the power of Aydin that was felt almost immediately with the Turk scoring a knock down very early on. Though Jo-Jo got up he had tasted the power and knew what could happen when he was tagged. Though the Romanian started tying up Aydin the straight right of the Turkish fighter looked like it was only being thrown with bad intentions, even though it was a hook that had sent Dan down.

Aydin established himself as the pressure fighter, coming forward behind a high guard whilst Dan seemed happy with his faster punches that were scoring though not putting the Turkish fighter off his plan, appearing more like an irritation than anything painful. Every time Aydin landed though the Romanian seemed in trouble, it was the true battle of speed v power. Though the battle was speed v power Dan did himself little favours by landing most of his shots on the tight guard of the Turk who in turn wasted little, though at time seemed inactive at points in the fight, notably the 3rd which was the best round early on for Dan.

A right early in the 4th buckled the Romanians legs though he recovered well another later on in the same round seemed to rattle him too. With Aydin being able to walk through Dan's shots and hurt him at will it seemed only a matter of time until he was going to put him out of there. A Dan slip was followed by boos from the partisan crowd who felt it was a genuine knock down in a round that would have put Aydin really in the driving seat.

Although both men had fairly solid amateur careers it was obvious that Jo Jo's style was still very amateur, despite having fought 26 fights as a professional. It was entirely about landing scoring shots with fast hands and no power at all behind them. The typical “point scoring shots” that have plagued the computer scoring system of the Olympics in recent years. Though Aydin also seemed flawed, at times far too inactive, his hooks were often wild and he failed far too often to really close the ring off, his body work was also missing. Though at the mid way point it seemed Aydin was in control of the fight mainly because Jo Jo wasn't effective in his aggression.

Was the Turks passiveness due to being tight at the weight? Was he pacing himself for 12? With Dan coming into the fight over the previous few rounds it seemed that the Romanian was building in confidence and it had been a while since Aydin had landed his solid right hand, The 8th though saw Aydin land clean and really shake the visitor and get the home crowd involved, something they hadn't been for a while. The8th had been Aydin's round as he nearly took the opponents head off at the bell. The Tyson like viciousness was back as it had been in the opening rounds, though was Aydin going to get Dan out of there?

The crowd were behind there man in the 9th, perhaps feeling this was the point that he was going to turn the screw as he seemed to at the end of the previous round, although he failed to he had against established that he was the boss and Dan was getting wilder. What early on were jabs were now hooks from the Romanian who seemed to be behind on the scorecards (which were openly announced after the 8th, though the scores were spoken over by the commentators). Jo Jo came out in the 10th fast throwing lots of fast jabs and straights though seemed to know fine well he was in dire need for a stoppage to win.. The 10th was certainly the Romanians best round though did he have anything left after a busy round that he completely dominated?

The 11th seemed to suggest he did...for the first half, then it became a lot of wrestling with Dan sent half out of the ring before a late surge at the end of the round. The Turkish corner could be heard, in English saying “push yourself, push” to their man after the 11th, but did he have anything left? It didn't seem like, he was clinching every time he could whilst Dan was still going for the stoppage. The final round was ugly looking more like 2 men trying to drunkenly dance than fight for vast parts.

Both men celebrated, had Dan done enough in the final 3 rounds (that he had dominated) to over turn the home fighters lead after 8? The crowd thought their man had the win, though Jo Jo Dan had done much more through the fight he sadly lacked the power that he needed and it showed in the score cards, two of which were 114-113 to Aydin, the first round knock down being the difference maker on those cards with Dan winning 116-111 on the third.

Although Jo Jo Dan (Also known as Ionut Dan Ion) had lost he had put up an impressive showing, had the fight been in Canada or Romania it's fair to assume he would have kept his unbeaten record. For Aydin his flaws really need ironing out before he gets a bigger fight. He appeared to have huge stamina issues and may be better suited to the Light Middleweight division if he's tight at the 147 limit.

-------- Only saw the last 3 rds, but what a dud by a pair of wasters.

This is the welter division boys, with some of the most active fighters in history. Reminded me of the Mosley/Forrest rematch with both guys hugging and nuzzling each other. Crimony creepers, if I wanted to watch male fornication I'd tune in to the MMA.

Aydin exhibited little of the strength or power he showed the last time I saw him. Dan looks like he could be an excellent boxer if he got his stamina sorted. There is no excuse given the weakness of the other why a decently conditioned version of either shouldn't have been able to take over the championship rounds. Ain't like they gotta go 15-20 rds any more.

Both these guys remain forever fringe contenders in my book, silver belt be damned.
