Cunningham to Tim Bradley: Devon Doesn't Fight Cowards

By Ryan Burton

On Saturday, BoxingScene.com ran an article by Mark Vester in which Tim Bradley said that Devon Alexander would be the toughest fight for him in the junior welterweight division.

"The toughest fight would be Devon [Alexander] no doubt. The second toughest fight would be Marcos Maidana, and the third would be Khan. That's how I rank it."

Bradley also said that Amir Khan is the money fight and that Khan still has a lot to learn.

"But the most money is Khan. I would take Khan in a heartbeat. Alexander is a lefty, he's quick and has a great jab, [and] he's hungry. The thing with Khan is, he's still learning. He still has a lot to learn. I saw a lot of things he did wrong against Malignaggi."

Kevin Cunningham, manager of IBF/WBC junior welterweight champion Devon Alexander, called BoxingScene to give us his opinion on Bradley's comments.

"Basically I think it is a shame that this guy continuously does interviews and after each interview he sticks his foot in his mouth everytime."

Cunningham is surprised that Bradley's manager (Cameron Dunkin) and promoter (Gary Shaw) haven't told him to tone down some of his comments. Bradley has been on the record numerous times on BoxingScene stating that he fights only for the money and would only fight Devon Alexander if the money is right.

"You would think his manager and promoter would pull his coat tail because the more interviews he does, the more he runs the few fans that he has away. All he does is talk about money."

Cunningham thinks the way Bradley has been quoted recently is very reminsicent of the way Floyd Mayweather Jr. speaks.

"Bradley is going around using Mayweather-like quotes saying he only fights for money. Saying that he doesn't fight for legacy or pride and basically that he doesn't want to fight the best out there. This guy is a fraud and it is getting to the point where we don't even have to get in the ring with him to prove that he is a fraud. The fans can see through it."

With his voice more animated, Cunningham said, "What young fighter do you know that is supposed to be the best in his division that is not willing to fight the best?"

Cunningham says he is curious as to why Bradley thinks his name should be in any discussion for Pacquiao or Mayweather fight.

"He is not entitled to any mega-fights or mega-paydays. Yes he is one of the best junior welterweights in the world but he has done nothing to deserve a shot at Mayweather or Pacquiao or even be in the conversation with those guys? The guy talks like he fell off a truck and bumped his head. Why would Mayweather or Pacquiao entertain fighting a guy who brings nothing to the table?"

At this point in our discussion Cunningham breaks down Bradley's resume. He doesn't see how Mayweather or Pacquiao would be interested in the California native.

"Here is a guy who beat Junior Witter, Kendall Holt and Lamont Peterson. That doesn't put you in postion to fight a Mayweather or Pacquiao."

Alexander's trainer goes further into questioning Bradley's viability by saying - "here is a guy that can't sell out a 2,000 seat arena in his own hometown. Here is a guy who has never fought on HBO, the biggest boxing network in the world yet here he is making all these demands and talking about all this money he deserves. I guarantee on August 7th we will at least triple the attendance that Bradley has for his fight in July. We will have triple the amount of fans at least."

Cunnningham continued, "Another thing is they had to add a popular local Mexican fighter to his card (Alfredo Angulo) to help sell more tickets. Tim Bradley can't sell flies to sh*t! Nobody goes to his fights."

In the same story by Vester, Bradley said he wanted to fight Maidana because HBO offered more money to fight Maidana then they offered for a unification bout with Devon Alexander.

"HBO offered me more money for Maidana (than Alexander). I'm fighting for money. I'm not fighting for pride anymore because I pretty much know what I can do. I'm not running scared. I would love Devon Alexander, but the money is with the other guys. I'm chasing the money fights. Manny and Floyd, these are the fights that I'm chasing. I got mouths to feed."

Kevin Cunningham claims an offer for a showdown between Devon Alexander and Tim Bradley was never made.

"He is so busy trying to stay away from an Alexander fight that he is lying on the networks. He said HBO offered him more money to fight Maidana than to fight Devon. Well HBO has never even gotten into any kind of financial discussions about a potential Alexander-Bradley fight. This guy is delirious and it is a shame that he is losing the few fans that he had."

Cunningham feels a fight between Alexander and Bradley would be financially beneficial to both parties.

"HBO knows Devon and Tim are the best junior welterweights in the world. They will will make the fight worthwhile to both sides. Bradley needs to stop making these excuses and stop hiding behind money, especially when he doesn't even know what the money is. He doesn't want the fight that would put him in position to land a mega-fight."

A tournament in the junior welterweight division has been discussed recently and Team Alexander and Team Khan have both recently signed off on the idea. Tim Bradley stated that he would sign off only if the money made sense. Team Alexander thinks that the tournament would produce a superstar that would be a viable option for Pacquiao or Mayweather.

"If he wants the mega-paydays he has the perfect scenario to get one. A fight with Devon, if he wins, would catapult him into superstardom where he is dreaming to be one day. The tournament would be a perfect way to do achive what he wants to achieve but he doesn't want to do that. He wants to slide his way into a mega-fight."

Cunningham continued - "I read where he breaks down the top fighters in the division and it is more obvious he doesn't want to fight the top guys. He says he wants to fight the guy with the least amount of ability and the least amount of experience. This is a guy that claims he is the best 140 pounder in the world. Bradley says out of his own mouth that Devon is the best fighter that he could possibly face but he doesn't want to fight that guy. I understand why he doesn't want to do it. If he ever stepped into the ring with Devon the fans would know who the true best junior welterweight in the world is. I have never seen a fighter in my life a fighter the way Bradley has avoided Devon."

Bradley fights Carlos Abregu on July 17th in his HBO debut in a fight will be his first in the welterweight division. It is believed by many that this fight is a showcase fight at the welterweight level to get Bradley's name in the mix - if negotiations between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather fall through.

Cunningham begs to differ - "If he thinks that fighting a guy like Carlos Abregu on HBO will put him in position to get a Mayweather or Pacquiao fight he is out of his f**king mind!"

Tim Bradley has stated that he would like a potential showdown with Alexander built up so the demand and therefore the money would be bigger. Team Alexander said, "If you want build up let your fight on July 17th and Devon's on August 7th be the build up. It is just like when Floyd Mayweather and Diego Corrales were young champions coming up. HBO matched those two together. Those were two true champions and look how it worked out."

Cunningham finished the interview by saying, "It is getting to the point where Devon is losing interest in fighting Tim Bradley. Devon is not interested in fighting cowards. Hopefully HBO can put the four man showdown together and we can have Devon versus Maidana and Khan versus Juan Manuel Marquez. Who needs Bradley? Let Bradley go fight the Carlos Abregu's of the world."

------- Cunningham should be happy King finally came through for one of his fighters and allegedly has dreary Kotelnik lined up for poor Devon since most of King's fights fall out these days like poor Corey Spinks recently.

Little bit jealous that HBO likes Bradley and offering to let him fight his way into the Floydy/Manny sweepstakes. If he beats the undefeated slugger Abregu, plenty enough time, 4 months, to fight Manny in his post election return in November.

Cunningham: Boo-Hoo-Hoo
