Casamayor up next for Khan?

Fresh off his battering of Paulie Malignaggi last month, the wheels are in motion to get Amir Khan back into the ring already.

Khan had wanted to fight Marcos Maidana, the mandatory challenger to his WBA junior welterweight title, but Maidana is still suffering with a back injury so Joel Casamayor is being explored as a potential opponent.

Casamayor, a former Olympic gold medalist and former lightweight champion of the world, is said to have been offered £400,000 to face Khan on July 31st in England possibly at London’s o2 Arena and it is thought that he is seriously considering the offer.

Casamayor’s last fight came in November 2009 where he weighed 146 pounds so fighting at 140 shouldn’t prove a massive problem for the fighter although his co manager Walter Kane feels Casamayor is still a lightweight.

I like how Khan has been calling Maidana out when everyone knows he is injured.

According to Bocrec, Casamayor is scheduled for 2010-07-31 TBA Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States

I supposed he'd jump at the chance to fight Khan though he does seem a little shopworn.

I have no problem with this. It was only 3 fights ago that Casamayor slaughtered Katsidis and he has only lost once in his last six.

Not a bad opponent for a supposed stay busy fight. I know his inactivity is a major question mark but there seems to be a catch with every fight made these days.

Joel Casamayor: I'm Knocking Amir Khan Out Dead

Former two division champion Joel Casamayor (37-4, 22KOs) and co-manager Luis DeCubas Jr. reached out to BoxingScene.com to set the record straight on all of the rumors pertaining to a possible fight with WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17KOs).

According to DeCubas, the fight between Khan and Casamayor is very close to being finalized for July 31 in England. Casamayor has accepted the fight, although the money being negotiated is lower than the amount of £400000 being reported by some of the UK papers.

DeCubas and co-manager Walter Kane are in the process of finalizing the details with Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. Khan-Casamayor will indeed be packaged, likely on a delayed basis, with the Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz HBO pay-per-view, which takes place on July 31 in Las Vegas.

Casamayor has vowed to emulate Breidis Prescott, who scored a brutal 54-second knockout over Khan in 2008. The 1992 Olympic gold medal winner is irritated with some of comments being put out there in the press where people are underestimating his chances based on age.

"July 31 is a go. Come July 31 lightning is going to strike twice because I'm going to knock Amir Khan out dead," Casamayor said. "I want to let the people know that I'm up for this fight."

"A lot of people are putting bad things out there. Timothy Bradley, [Marcos] Maidana and [Devon] Alexander, these guys have done nothing for this sport. What have they done for this sport? I'm a four-time world champ in two weight classes. Amir Khan has done nothing either and come July 31st I'm going to prove that he's a nobody."

DeCubas tells BoxingScene that Casamayor has already begun to train for the big opportunity.

"July 31st is basically the date that we're fighting Amir Khan. They money hasn't really been squared away 100%. We're working on that now. But Joel is going. Joel is training and he's ready to go," DeCubas said. "Joel has put his time in the game and he's going to prove it on July 31st."

During Khan's pre-fight hype for last month's bout with Paulie Malignaggi, there was a lot of trash talking going on. DeCubas is not concerned about any of the pre-fight antics coming from Khan or his team.

"Do you think Amir Khan can play head games with Casamayor? Casamayor played head games with [Dieogo] Corrales and real fighters. Not made up stars," DeCubas said.

A KAtsidis that had decked him twice and was fighting at 135 not Khans 140 by fight night Casamayor will have boxed 8 rounds in 18 months and be over 2 years since the Katsidis victory. As he passes 39 years of age. King Con strikes again.

Why, if he wanted to unify, didn't he offer to step in when Devon Alexander wanted an opponent?...Enough said.

LOL, just like with most things involving Khan, his backers are going to praise the choice and his critics are going to portray Casa as a candidate for a Senior Citizens Care Facility. I think the answer lies somewhere in between, but bottom line is there's certainly worse fighters he could be fighting.....and a couple that would've been better.

Not that this is a factor but Casamayor was put down only once, Katsidis was decked twice in the first round, the first one being only 22 seconds into it.

We didn't know how Khan could handle 140, the jury is still out on Joel even though he fought his last fight at 140 so we will see.

I never said anything about Khan's desire to unify.

You don't promote a unification fight in the space of 2 months, anyway, especially when one of them (Khan) had just fought in a theatre that only held 5,600!

It doesn't make business sense.

This is just a stay busy fight for Khan, nothing more, nothing less (it's next month!) but it wouldn't surprise me to see the promoters want to milk all the cents and pennies they can out of Alexander and Khan first.

That is often how it goes.

GBP want Khan to have the same fan base type as Hatton, which is just not going to happen, but they want to try and it would be foolish on their part to throw Khan to the wolves in the mean time.

I am not a Khan critic. Casamayor is a fossil. lol//

It's somewhat refreshing to see a world champion fight so close to his last fight.I don't see any problem with it as a stay busy fight.Casamayor is done, I believe at a world class level, but it's better than no fight at all.

I'm guessing this will be early in the morning here in britain for hbo to pick up on.Hopefully ITV also pick it up along with the rematch between Marquez and Diaz.

But it's the third title fight where he's had a gimme (Salita, Powder Puff Paulie and Casa-seen-better-days-mayor) whilst people have been accusing him of avoiding a puncher...heck a prime 135lber would have sufficed (think Mickey K here) or an all Brit 140 fight (Olesegun, McCloskey) at a scrape...not a fighter who's won 1 in 2 years.

Don't get me wrong, the criticism is justified, but I'd rather see him fight in July than wait until the end of the year until he fights again.

Khan is wonderfull isnt he

First of all he calls out an injured Maidana, then says he wants to fight bradley who is fighting Abgregu, then talks about Alexander who is fighting Kotelnik. The passes over Katsidis to fight Cassamayor. Fantastic business sense.

Casual fans dont know Bradley and Alexander have fight lined up, they sure as hell done know Maidana is injured, all they know is Khan wants to fight the 3 of them put its not possible.

+1 to the UK fans who know nothing about boxing

-1 to real UK fans like me who see this as a pathetic make Khan look good fight, yet again
