Wheelchair
Birmingham's ex-British middleweight champion Wayne Elcock says a shot at the English title is his next likely move as he bids for a return to action. Elcock, 36, lost his crown in March 2009 and saw his hopes of reclaiming the Lonsdale belt against Darren Barker last November dashed by illness. "We put ourselves back in and wanted the fight back on but the board kicked it out," Elcock told BBC WM. "He's somewhat off the radar and I may have to go for the English title." Since the fight with Elcock was called off, Barker has gone on to win the British and European titles to add to his Commonwealth belt and Elcock knows he will have to be patient in his bid to get another shot. "I'm still number three in the country but it might mean going the long route," he said. "It may mean going the route I went before when I fought [steve] Bendall for the English title to get back to the British and force Darren Barker to fight me." Elcock is also aware that boxing politics may come to his aid with Barker currently holding three titles. "If I can get the English title I can push for a claim for the British and the British board are a body in their own right and can force Barker to fight me for a mandatory defence. Whether the European title would be on the line is a different matter, but I can get to him via the British (title) and that's my main aim at the moment." Although he has been out of the ring for 14 months since losing to Matthew Macklin, Elcock insists he has no thoughts of letting his frustration force him into retirement. "I've not hung up the gloves and I don't want to," he added to BBC WM. "I still love the game and I still want to fight. It's just getting someone to fight me. Hopefully that'll all be resolved shortly and I'll be back in title action and get that British belt back in Birmingham where it belongs." http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/8691927.stm

WelshDevilRob
Re: Wayne Elcock eyes English title fight If you have the European, I thought you had to relinquish the British? I think you can hold all 3 major domestic titles at the sametime i.e European, Commonwealth and European.

As an aside to this Dennis Andries held the british and WBC light-heavy titles at the same time. His fight with Tony Sibson was for both titles.
