Nate Campbell: 'If I lose, I probably won't get on TV again'

Former world lightweight champion Nate Campbell has a lot to prove on Saturday night.

The Jacksonville boxer, 38, is the underdog against younger and quicker Victor Ortiz in the HBO light welterweight bout at Madison Square Garden in New York.

And though Campbell is coming off a bout against Timothy Bradley he technically didn't lose — it was declared a no-contest because of a head butt that gashed Campbell's eye in the third round — it raised a lot of questions about the future for Campbell, who was losing badly.

"Very important,'' Campbell told the media this week about Saturday's fight. "If I lose, I probably won't get on TV again."

The 10-round Campbell-Ortiz bout is the first of two bouts on the HBO card. The main event is a 12-round super lightweight title bout between title-holder Amir Kahn and Paulie Malignaggi.

Campbell (33-5-1, 25 KOs) is hoping a victory on Saturday earns him another title shot, or at the very least, a rematch with Bradley.

Campbell said the level of competition he has fought is far superior to the 23-year-old Ortiz (26-2-1, 21 KOs), and Campbell said he doesn't spend a lot of time worrying about his opponent.

"I don't care who you put in front of me," Campbell said. "I never have. I'm going to let my hands do the talking."

Campbell beat Juan Diaz to win the lightweight title in 2008, then lost the title when he failed to make weight against Ali Funeka last year.

Campbell hasn't fought since the bout against Bradley on Aug. 1.
