Talks to begin again for Pacquiao-Mayweather

EW YORK (AP)—Manny Pacquiao may soon turn his attention from campaigning for Congress to negotiating the details on the richest fight in boxing history.

Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, told The Associated Press on Monday that discussions could begin as early as Tuesday for a bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr., once results are in from the Philippine elections. Pacquiao is running for Congress for the second time.

The matchup involving boxing’s two most high-profile fighters was discussed at length earlier this year, but negotiations fell apart when the sides could not agree on drug testing protocol.

Both took different fights, with Pacquiao soundly beating Joshua Clottey at the new Cowboys Stadium near Dallas, and Mayweather routing welterweight champion Shane Mosley in Las Vegas.

“I think the fight will happen,” said Roach, who was in New York with another of his fighters, Amir Khan, who defends his junior welterweight title against Paulie Malignaggi on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.

“It will probably be November, maybe October,” Roach added. “November’s not a great pay-per-view month, but I think it will happen.”

Roach wouldn’t say whether Pacquiao would budge on the drug testing dilemma. Mayweather has said that every fight he takes, beginning with Mosley, will include Olympic-style blood testing along with the typical urine tests required by most athletic commissions. That means the fighters could have blood drawn in the days leading up to the fight.

Pacquiao believes giving blood makes him weak and refused to do so within 24 days of a fight.

“If Manny Pacquiao can take a blood and urine test then we have a fight,” Mayweather said shortly after his victory May 1. “If not, no fight.”

Both fighters months ago agreed to what is usually the major sticking point in negotiations with a deal to split the proceeds evenly. That may not happen the second time around, though, depending on how the pay-per-view numbers shake out from their other bouts. Pacquiao-Clottey generated about 700,000 buys while Mayweather-Mosley is expected to be over 1.1 million.

That could give some additional leverage to Mayweather, even though his opponent was much better known. Other than the stadium venue, Pacquiao was the only real draw in his bout.

One thing that won’t become an issue is Pacquiao’s potential duties in Congress.

“When he fights they close down Parliament and all the terrorists call for a peace,” Roach said, only half jokingly. “It’s not going to change anything. They’ll just announce him as Congressman Manny Pacquiao, that’s all.”

Roach had been receiving constant updates from promoter Bob Arum, who spent the last few days before the election in the Philippines. Roach said early returns show Pacquiao “winning in a landslide” against 61-year-old Roy Chiongbian, who comes from a politically powerful family.

Computer problems and campaign-related violence, which has killed more than 30 people in the past three months, were the main concerns in the voting. Official hope the results set a new standard for the country’s fragile democracy, where government corruption is common.

“He wants change,” Roach said of Pacquiao, who lost decisively in his first attempt at politics. “I think it’s genuine. People see that he wants to help his country, and that’s why they’re voting. That’s why they support him.”

The way I see it, what's changed? We had an empass in Feb and we have one now. Like McBride says, why get optimistc, just because the rhetoric and the games are going to start up again? I'm not going to spend one more second worrying about this fight, let me know when they have a drug deal worked out and a contract signed, until then don't waste my time, they've done enough of that already.

Weight demands, drug testing demands, glove type demands, ring size demands, purse split demands, its all bollox, one upmanship pure and simple. No more excuses, both of them make the fight, or F*** off.

Exactly, they either want to fight each other & will make the fight happen or they don't & won't.

I hope they do & will. I honestly have no idea who'll win after Floyd's masterclass the other week but it will be the biggest event for a long time.

-------- Manny already agreed to blood and urine tests.

A 1000% more tests than 98% of Floydy's previous opponents.

Hey, Floydy, who's yer DADDY?

Personally I couldn't care less either way anymore, I thought I'd just report what's being said.

I'm losing interest rapidly. I think I will be sharing your viewpoint very soon.

Well there's plenty of other boxing coming up to keep us all entertained.

Yeah, I wasn't directing that at you, Chair. Your just reporting what's going on, and we appreciate that. I just meant that if these guys think we the boxing fans are going to stand for another round of playing games, they've underestimated us.

Agreed, we're in the midst of a real hotbed of fights actually signed and ready to go here, all the way through Summer. If they give me reason to, then I'll get back to thinking about this one when October rules around.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones boasts he can provide the biggest indoor fight crowd for a U.S. boxing event in history and he has a couple of open dates in the fall available to prove it.

But can he land the fight?

Jones said Wednesday he’d love to host Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that we’d break every record of attendance that anybody’s ever seen for boxing,” Jones said at the Cowboys annual sponsor appreciation golf outing in Grapevine. “I think it’d be a real plus for boxing to be able to expose that many people live to a great fight like that and that’s what we’ve got to sell and that’s what we’re going to be selling.

“If given the opportunity, the magic that would be involved and having over 100,000 _ and there’s no question in my mind, I think we would maybe approach 120,000 for that fight.”

Ranking No. 1 indoors was the heavyweight title bout between Muhammad Ali and Leon Spinks in 1978 that drew 63,350 to the Superdome in New Orleans. The overall record for the largest boxing crowd sits at 132,274 for Julio Cesar Chavez’ bout at Azteca Stadium in Feb. 1993.

The undefeated Mayweather (41-0) and Pacquiao (51-3-2) would battle for both the welterweight title and the unofficial mantle as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Cowboys spokesman Brett Daniels said, “We certainly had a great experience with the fight in March and we would love to be involved in conversations for another Pacquiao fight.”

Pacquiao defeated Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium on March 13 in front of 50,994 fans.

Daniels confirmed both Nov. 6 and 13, both Saturdays, are available dates at Cowboys stadium, but nothing has been reserved because the fight has not yet been agreed upon by Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank and Mayweather’s representatives from Golden Boy Promotions. The Cowboys play on the road at Green Bay on Nov. 7 and at the New York Giants on Nov. 14.

Pacquiao and Mayweather were slated to fight earlier this year, but the fight fell apart due to Mayweather’s insistence on strict drug testing.

Pacquiao won his political fight this week to capture a congressional seat in his native Philippines.

Staff writer Charean Williams contributed to this report.

I've never been a fan of stadium fights. I was ringside for hatton at coms but still didn't enjoy it as much as an arena fight.

Also I have friend who went the cowboys stadium for the fight and they didn't report back favourable

I wasn't that impressed with Dallas as a venue with the the Pac-Clottey fight, one thing that is really annoying is that ridiculously oversized TV Screen, which IMO would be nothing if not distracting. But hey, perhaps with a more competitive fight, maybe it wouldn't have ended up being a joint nap for 50K people ;)

Grapevine-

There's some complaints from the Fans who sit nearly Eye level with the TV Screen for Football. I've heard that some them wear Hats and Visors not because they really want to but because they still have a reasonable good seat to watch the game, but want to look at the field without distraction....so you pull your visor down and only point your head up when you actually DO want to watch a replay or something. If your down low it's fine and if your a mile away it's fine, but not for those in the middle, which account for a LOT of the Seats.
