Faulks
Tyson: "I'm broke" Former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has admitted he is broke. The 43-year-old squandered ring earnings of more than $300 million which led to him filing for bankruptcy in 2003. Tyson told US talk show The View: "I'm totally destitute and broke. But I have an awesome life, I have an awesome wife who cares about me. "I'm totally broke. I had a lot of fun. It (going broke) just happened. I'm very grateful. I don't deserve to have the wife that I have; I don't deserve the kids that I have, but I do, and I'm very grateful." Tyson had a cameo in the comedy film 'The Hangover' last year and is now taking part in a reality TV show that follows him as he raises and races pigeons in New York. Skav
Tyson was too young to win the world title, in my opinion. 20 is still quite a sensitive age, especially for somebody who knew nothing but to rob people and get arrested time and time again. Because of his age, I doubt he knew the in's and out's of the business side of boxing and that's possibly the reason why he made the poor choices that he did. davemurphy
Tyson won´t last too much longer, the man is a timebomb. I used to think his not being alive at 40 was a absolute guaranteed certainty, but the incidents have decreased since he's been on his medication full time and I don't see the timebomb we used to have. SeelowHeights
Shame he never had the sense to tuck $1 million away for emergencies. Exactly. He only has himself to blame. goodp// Really, I struggle to see what the hell is so hard about the dictum "spend only what you have" as it's a more than common story. It's not even foresight, it's honest-to-goodness common sense. Especially (ok, even if he got dicked out of a fair few million) if you're pulling the sums in that Tyson was getting. As they say, a fool never learns from his own mistakes, a smart guy learns from his own mistakes, but a wise guy also learns from the mistakes of others. They also say people who spout cliches get what's coming to them. Honestly, it's like you expect everryone to behave rationally and with cold deatchment. Everyone just isn't like that, and frankly when you've come from NOTHING and someone's payiing you 50 million for 10 minutes work, when you're worth half a BILLION dollars, it must seem like the money is never going to end. He was foolish and he did make mistakes and he got involved with both Don King and Robin Givens for a kick-off. That, plus the hangers on and entourage must have made it very difficult to keep in touch with reality, especially when you consider he was already unstable. My ex-girlfriend went bankrupt with credit card debts of about 30 grand, barely earning enough to cover her morrtage and utility bills much less food. Then she got fired from her job, but would still drive from Yorkshire to Wales to watch 5 frames of snooker in the qualifying stages, reasoning that she wasn't using the fuel in her tank for anything else. Some people just can't seem to break the habits of a particular lifestyle, and thhey don't see money as real. I don't pity Tyson because he had a great time for a large part of his life and he's achieved some amazing things and still seems quite content now. But why should the fact he was rich and successful mean he doesn't deserve sympathy when his life falls apart almost overnight?

Wheelchair
There should be facility for governing bodies of the sport to keep money in a trust for the fighters future when they are in need of it. A small amount taken from the boxers purse and build up the fund for each fighter.

Which is exactly my viewpoint. Well done son. lol// Firstly, it wasn't a diatribe because it wasn't attacking anyoine. Secondly, you seem unable to distinguish between pity and sympathy - I don't pity him his current situation, but I sympathise, or perhaps empathise would be a better word, because of the way he lost everything so suddenly. Of course he was foolish, he's admitted that himself. You seem to feel this burning contempt for people who behave illogically. I can honestly say if someone made me a squillionaire and one of the most famous men on the planet, I'd probably struggle to behave rationally for a large chunk of the time. Diatribes can mean long discourses as well, and I don't believe he deserves any pity or sympathy whatsoever. You have said he admitted himself that he was foolish but strangely you seem to empathise with the fool and be seemingly just as critical of someone who has made it clear he was foolish. There is only one person to blame for him losing everything so suddenly. That man is Mike Tyson himself. That is the long and the short of it. If you would struggle to behave relatively sensibly in the same boat, knowing what has happened to him (and many, many others) with his struggles, would that make you as big a fool as him? Tyson has pissed many millions of $s against a wall though, tough luck. He can still earn & his name is still one of the biggest in sport. Despite his flaws, I like the bloke but do not feel sorry for him as he can still earn enough in a week to pay off the house I'm chipping away at with a 30 year mortgage. Welcome to the real world Mike!
donlevy
I posted in another thread that Tyson was quite good on the BBC on the couple of times he was ringside for fights. When was this? Anyways,I know he worked a number of broadcasts for showtime back in the 90's. His commentary right the way through Julio Cesar Chavez's vs with Lonnie Smith was bascially a near hour long boxing history lesson.
