Liakhovich to face Quinn

Former WBO heavyweight champion Siarhei Liakhovich (24-3, 15 KO’s) has just announced that he will be fighting in a featured ten round fight on the undercard of the Ruslan Chagaev versus Kali Meehan fight on May 22 in Rostock Germany against noted Nicaraguan prospect Evans Quinn (18-3-1, 16 KO’s). Liakhovich began his comeback on November of last year with a first round knockout over Jeremy Bates, and although Quinn is not a ranked fighter, he is still seen as a dangerous foe and a clear step up from the journeyman Bates.

“He’s a young guy, full of energy,” commented Liakhovich on his opponent, “he comes straight to you. You need to expect the unexpected from him.”

Quinn was quickly emerging as one of the hottest Latino heavyweight prospects in the world until a shocking upset loss to Harvey Jolly in April of last year in St. Louis Missouri sent him back to the drawing board. His most recent fight saw Quinn again struggle in an eight round draw with Panamanian Luis Andres Pineda in Panama. The loss and the draw has scuttled Quinn’s hope of cracking into the world rankings, but many insiders still feel he is a competent heavyweight who could rise to the occasion if given the opportunity, and some feel that he still should be regarded as a prospect despite the setbacks.

“I’m focused on the fight,” added Liakhovich, “I don’t care where he’s ranked, I will be ready and when the time will come everyone will see what I can do with this guy in the ring.”

According to fightnews another heavyweight is on the comeback trail....

Popular heavyweight Timo Hoffmann (38-7-1, 22 KOs) returns to action on June 4 against an opponent to be named. The fight will take place in a ring constructed outdoors at the Aschersleben Garden Show. It’s the 35-year-old Hoffmann’s first bout since dropping split decision to Frans Botha in May 2009

------ Interesting case study, Liakhovich. It's been 6 yrs since he beat Guinn who was still a touted American contender back then.

Took a year off and then beat the belt off Brewster in a brilliant fight which spiked his Ring rating out the kazoo, then stupidly traded with Briggs in the 12th rd of a fight he was well up on and lost his belt.

Took 2yrs off and then showed up out of shape and beat by Valuev. He's only had 4 fights over the past 6 yrs in spite of being in the full flower of his prime years, and with Donnell Holmes is next in the queue. now he's got 2 fights within a couple months? Interesting.

This guy Quinn had a big 1rd KO of some novice journeyman a few yrs back that all the 8th graders were creaming about when the tube clip went around the internet. He's only dangerous to novice journeymen with no chin, but he's got a crazy style that should test Sergei early.

Looks like the retirement of Ruiz has caused King to resurrect Liakhovich to have a go at the WBO merry go round again. Always thought Sergei had the talent and toughness to become a top era heavy, and with his nickname of White Wolf, he would be a natural to promote, but alas.

A side note, anyone see Guinn's last victory pic over some hapless journeyman on Fightnews? Looks to have been beaten into an unrecognizable lump. When I saw him in street clothes next to me in Houston 6 yrs ago, he was an impressive prime physical speciman with a cool, relaxed, handsome look to him. Wouldn't know the fella from the lump I saw.

Rough sport for a guy with no defense but his chin, he's never been stopped, so always a big payday for him against the next big prospect looking for a splash..
