More talk of a Calzaghe comeback

Recommended Posts

HE vowed it would never happen — but Joe Calzaghe is considering a comeback.

The Welshman hung up his gloves after outpointing Roy Jones Jr with a dominant display at Madison Square Garden in November 2008.

But it now appears he is willing to risk his 46-fight unbeaten record by agreeing to a rematch with Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas.

Calzaghe, 38, defeated Hopkins via split decision in his first ever fight on American soil in April 2008.

The Executioner, who floored his opponent in the first round, to this day maintains he should have been declared the winner.

And he could get the chance to set the record straight after Calzaghe held talks with Golden Boy chief executive Richard Schaefer.

Schaefer said: "Joe has expressed interest and so has Bernard.

"We will try to make it happen in the autumn."

It is unclear who Calzaghe would be trained by if he does return to the ring.

His father Enzo was in his corner for every one of his bouts but he has played down Schaefer's comments.

He said: "There is no truth in it — and I would be the first to know."

It was a close fight with Hopkins, but not sure I would want to see it again. If it happens it needs a ref that would do something about Hopkins holding all the time.

Coach Enzo Calzaghe rules out Joe Calzaghe comeback

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/47769000/jpg/_47769910_joe_enzo.jpg

Enzo Calzaghe has ruled out his undefeated son Joe coming back for a rematch with American Bernard Hopkins.

Calzaghe, who reigned as a super-middle and light-heavyweight champion for more than 11 years, retired last year with a perfect 46-fight professional record.

But Golden Boy Promotions chief Richard Schaefer revealed Calzaghe had "expressed an interest" in returning.

However Calzaghe Sr, Joe's trainer, told BBC Sport: "There is no truth in it - and I would be the first to know."

The Welshman beat superstar Hopkins in a controversial split points decision in Las Vegas on his United States and light-heavyweight debut in April 2008.

Calzaghe then quit the ring after a unanimous points victory over Roy Jones Jr, another American boxing legend, at New York's famous Madison Square Garden.

And after the fight, reflecting on a career that included beating Chris Eubank to win the WBO super-middleweight title in 1997, unifying the division by beating Dane Mikkel Kessler and winning the 2007 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, Calzaghe said he had "achieved everything I wanted to achieve in boxing".

However, the 38-year-old, who held the WBO, WBA, WBC and IBF super-middleweight belts during his 16-year professional career, was back in Vegas at the weekend to watch Floyd Mayweather Jr's points win over Shane Mosley, strengthening rumours that he could be close to a return.

Hopkins also beat Jones Jr last month and both he and Calzaghe have apparently spoken to Oscar de la Hoya's promotion company about another Anglo-American super-fight, with Schaefer telling the Daily Mail a fight could happen in the autumn.

Calzaghe, who has suffered costly domestic and promotional separations in recent years and struggled with a lack of routine since retiring, may be tempted by a big-money rematch and left the comeback door ajar when he retired by saying "you can never say never in this game", although he then said "I can't see myself boxing again".

And renowned trainer Enzo, who has been in Joe's corner since the age of nine, insisted he would not be his son's trainer should the southpaw announce a comeback.

"The talk of Joe coming back is news to me and being close as I am to Joe as a trainer and a father, I would be first know," he said.

"As far as I'm concerned he is retired and the word retired means retired.

"He probably wakes up every morning and think shall I have another fight? But thinking about it and doing it are two completely different things.

"His legacy is second to none and only a few in the sport have the mystique of finishing their career unbeaten.

"He retired at the very top after a superb win over Roy Jones Jr in one of his finest performances - he whitewashed a legend.

"He retired because he had lost his hunger for boxing. Once you lose the hunger, how are you going to reignite it? For financial gain?

"If Joe comes back now, he's playing with danger because he has nothing to gain and everything to lose. If he does ask me my advice on a comeback I'd say go ahead - but without me. I know what he achieved cannot be touched or bettered.

"Joe and my boxing philosophy was always it's all about the glory rather than the money whereas a comeback would be for the wrong reason.

"If Joe has a bad day at the office and loses then retires again - it's too late as he would have lost that unbeaten tag.

"My theory is if his appetite has gone, why come back?"

If its true i want to see it go this way...........

Warm up fight 47-0

Hopkins rematch 48-0

Carl Froch 49-0

Winner of super 6 (it aint gonna be carl) 50-0

Retirement

i think it would be more like this:

warm up fight 47-0

tell everyone froch/bute/hopkins is next.

jesse brinkley at the millenium 48-0

tell everyone cloud/bute/pascal/dawson need to get in line and accept joe's the man and he's not going anywere to fight them, so they need to come to wales if they want the fight.

edison miranda at the millenium 49-0

tell everyone it's his dream to be a champion in three weights, which will prove his standing as the greatest boxer ever.

danny green at the millenium. 50-0

Lets just get the one thing cleared up lads. Is there anyone on this site dumb enough to believe Froch would actually win even a round against Calzaghe if he did comeback and fight him? He throws four punches every minute and a half, and his defence is non existent.

Hopkins can make anyone look bad with his negative style of fighting, but other than his delusional self no one is remotely interested in seeing the fool.

So apart from the usual name calling horseshit, and whining about who he coulda, woulda, shoulda fought garbage, who exactly do we see giving him a worthwhile fight?

Seeing as he's now a Light Heavy i suppose someone will throw up that numpty Dawsons name. Dont make me laugh, he was taking rests against the slightly busier than Froch, Tarver. Even if he has another 2 years off Calzaghe would still have a higher workrate than that.

So he's using a career strategy the exact opposite as before?

I'll believe that when I see it.

Kessler and Lacy were Joe's only two decent wins in his career. Those two fights can't erase the years of him fighting bums. And Bute? I bet Joe don't take him on.

As the rumours and speculation builds on former two-weight champ Joe Calzaghe’s return to the ring, you have to wonder what the reason could be. Is it money? Is it that sense of longing for the glory and respect that most successful fighters feel when they retire?

According to Calzaghe’s father Enzo, Joe, 38, would never make a return to the ring for a payday, but you have to wonder what else the talked of Bernard Hopkins rematch would be for. Neither man is getting any younger, and with Hopkins’ poor fight against Roy Jones last time and Calzaghe’s eighteen month absence from boxing the only reason would surely be to settle personal grudges, and make more money.

“I am categorically against Joe coming back just for the money. How much money does one person need?” said Calzaghe’s father and trainer Enzo. “If Joe says ‘Dad, I want to return for a massive payday’ I wouldn’t be interested. But I doubt he’d do that anyway.”

Only recently Calzaghe was in the headlines for all the wrong reasons after being caught unawares by an undercover tabloid journalist who filmed Joe talking about his experience of using cocaine. The very next day it was all over the media and Calzaghe’s reputation seemed to have taken a hit. The fact that this rumour has come not long after is intriguing.

Nevertheless US tv giants HBO are firmly behind any comeback Calzaghe wishes to make, and promised to back him if he chooses to do so.

“Absolutely, we would be at the Millennium Stadium (close to Joe’s hometown in Cardiff) if Joe opted to fight again. It wouldn’t be as big for the American public but it would be bigger in the UK” said HBO senior vice-president Kerry Davies. “It’s all down to Joe. If he wants to go back to Wales for another big fight, we will go with big smiles and open arms.”

All these signs are pointing towards a comeback for Calzaghe, but as father Enzo points out, nobody can answer the question definitively but them.

“There is no point speculating as everyone is doing,” said Enzo Calzaghe. “The only people with the answers are Joe and myself. We are a team.”

“There is nothing left in boxing for him to prove” he continued, “But if he thinks otherwise we’ll need to talk about it honestly with each other.”

its odd that HBO would be behind a calzaghe come back seeing as how he did weak numbers against BHOP on WCB and awful numbers against jones on PPV
