WelshDevilRob
Michael Katsidis' manager unhappy with appointment of English referee BOXING: Michael Katsidis' manager is protesting against the appointment of an English referee for the WBO interim lightweight world champion's much anticipated title defence against unbeaten Briton Kevin Mitchell in London next month. The WBO has appointed experienced official Dave Parris to handle the May 15 bout between Queenslander Katsidis (26-2 21 KOs) and Mitchell (31-0 23 KOs) at Upton Park, the home of English Premier League club West Ham. Katsidis' trainer and manager Brendon Smith said it was a serious matter and he was "playing for keeps" by immediately initiating contact with the WBO over the appointment of Parris. He said he wasn't questioning Parris' ability but just felt it would be fairer to have a referee from a neutral country. Smith has got his legal representatives in Queensland to send correspondence to Puerto Rico-based WBO president Francisco Valcarcel registering his disappointment. "I believe we will overcome this and there will be a change of referee," Smith said from Katsidis' training base in Thailand. www.theaustralian.com.au

iamasadlittleboy
yeah, how can the wbo allow a british ref in a british ring with british fighter v foriegner so often? It's not like theirs no one else =/

Faulks
This has the potential to be a real good fight. I'd be guuted if it was clouded in controversy by the ref

WelshDevilRob
Dave Parris has been around along time but in truth has had his day. Neutral ref will be the fairest solution in such a big fight. In the UK these last couple of years - refs have been jumping in way too early and we don't want this for Mitchell vs Katsidis. I believe Katsidis will win as he has fought at a higher level than Mitchell. Gonna be a competitive fight though.
super_hoops1967
"In the uk recently" do you mean, in all khan fights promoted by fwank? 2/3 punches combined = fight stopped. I'm hoping for a good fight but I think the first 3/4 round will be slow with froch taking it late on.

Skav
I agree with roberto duran, it's just the same old stuff we see when a big fight happens. I can understand Katsidis point. I'm going to the fight on the 15th and Mitchell is a local lad, as I am also from Dagenham, but I also feel that Katsidis will get the better of him. I expect it to be an entertaining fight! dulais_valley
I reckon Mitchell is smart enough to outwork Katsidis. The aussie is pretty one dimensional in my book and has an inflated reputation based almost as much on heroic losing performances as on his wins. Earl was shite when he fought him and somehow Katsidis still managed to make it a war. A top level fighter would have beaten Earl without problems let alone getting dropped. Had the ref not called a premature KD on Katsidis' part he could of got stopped in the fight. He followed that up with an exciting but in truth pretty average performance against Amonsot yet because he was cut to ribbons but won he came out of it with shedloads of credit. Again, a good fighter would have won without the mess he got himself into.

He's a Gatti like fighter who is great to watch because he makes his easy fights hard and exciting, he was a solid amateur too though seems to have tossed the AM background away to make exciting brawls... knock-out-ned
ricky hatton had british refs for years. parris for tszyu, vann for maussa. i mean, in america, the ref is always american. pacquaio, hatton and co get american refs against american fighters all the time in the states. knock-out-ned
i also remember cortez in the castillo fight. no-one had an issue with him then. or indeed tony weeks in the urango fight, or kenny bayless in the malignaggi fight. if katsidis were to fight an american in the states, where would the ref be from? yet for some reason, having a british ref in britain is a major problem. why?
