Two highly regarded heavyweights collide this Saturday at Citizens Business Bank Arena, Ontario, California, in what many are picking as a Fight of the Year candidate.

Tomasz “Goral” Adamek is the former two division champion stepping up to his 3rd division in a bid to win a heavyweight title. A win over former challenger Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola guarantees him a title shot within a year. Arreola is in a similar circumstance, hungry for another crack at the title and a win over Adamek would open the doors for him.

Goral is Polish for Highlander, a reference to the region where Adamek was raised, but it also connotes an exotic coolness of temperament which describes the Adamek approach to boxing to a T. With a 40-1 career record at age 33 and seemingly in his prime as a boxer, he’s near becoming a legend in boxing that he already is in Poland.

Tomasz can box some, brawl a little, fight inside or out with a little slugging thrown in as his 27 KO victims can attest, but he is never locked into one style, and he’s in no hurry to get anything done. His offense just flows to him when the moment is right, and if he has to take a few steps back, cover on the ropes and take some time off, hey, no big deal to take a rest and reset. He’s smart, patient, and he has an innate fighting sense of which adjustments to make to figure out how to beat very good fighters.

Arreola has the fire to light up Adamek’s coolness, though. He’s an highly charged come forward busy brawler/slugger looking for a trade, a nightmare if you can’t fight him off. At age 29 with a 28-1 record with an 86% KO ratio, he is used to getting his way in the ring and has also become a fan favorite in Southern California, so this donnybrook will be in his stompin' grounds, a distinct advantage.

A little disingenuous perhaps? Given that the only one who regards Arreola highly seems to be you.

I seriously doubt it will be fight of the year, and I think Adamek wins on points by a country miles, unless he gets careless and walks into a bomb.

arreola is barely a top 10 heavyweight in a weak division. it would be nice if he actually fought somebody in the top 10, but he signed with goosen so that means easy fights and a "hope i get lucky and get asked for title shot". i do like his combination punching and he is an exciting fighter... though i dont think hes world class.

i dunno about adamek in this fight, he takes a lot of punches and arreola is a big puncher. so im not really sure. interesting fight.

cant call it a FOTY before i see it, though on paper it looks like it could end up that way.

Arreola ranked 3rd by WBO, 5th by WBC, 6th by Ring/Fightnews, 9th by IBF and 11th by boxrec, 6 of the 7 major rankings, more than any British heavy.

I don't get the bail reference - bail bondsman or something?

I've told you before that rankings prove very little, and the only reason Arreola's ranked higher than a British heavy is cos one of the two we've got is a world champion, so he's above the ranking altogether.

Arreola is still a man with no defence, no stamina, no obvious skills but a good soklid punch and a fairly solid chin. If Adamek can keep him moving for 5 rounds, he's f**ked.

I agree with you about Arreola but unless we see some new kind of Adamek then this fight should be very competitive and the two styles should produce a very good fight.

Adamek is flat footed with a poor defence, he doesn't have great power but seems to possess a solid chin. I don't think he will be able to stay out of range for 5 rounds and this could well turn into a slugfest.

Should be a good fight I'm looking forward to it anyhow. Could quite easily go either way. I'm stcking with rolly arreola to win this. More experience though I wouldn't be surprised if he got beat.

Neither of these beasts will go down in history as 'world class' but that's all we got to offer at the moment I'm afraid

Arreola said bvefore the weigh-in he was going to be much lighter thgis time - "240, maybe 245" he said. Lump with a punch.

-------- That was his promoter talkin'. Talk is cheap and goalposts moveable before a fight.

He's 13lbs under his last fight and right at the weight he was most comfortable at in his best training camp ever against Klitschko.

Welcome to go back in time and read Graham Houston's props to him as he outlined Arreola's new regime.

This is the 12 rd lotsa knockdowns era where finely training down weight is a disadvantage. Need to go read so material on the meager rations Jeffries partook to make it down to the 210-220 he normally fought at.

Arreola most resembles a modern day Tony Galento who was a fearsome slugger who never took training near as serious as Arreola is now. Ali was tubby for much of comeback......Holmes just kept growing.......Foreman.......80s WBA champs.........and on it goes.

Cant belive the state CA has come in at.

I really thought after the VK loss he meant what he said about getting into shape for his next proper fight (no disrespect to Minto).

Seeing that weigh in pic I cant see anything other than a stoppage win for Adamek now, he will be too fast, too mobile and win by late TKO.

I looked at the weigh in photo and had to check my own 'man boobs', as I thought Cris had stolen them.

I read somewhere that in his last fight he was around 263lbs for the weigh in - an impressive Ko over the tough but limited Minto. (Cracking fight) So he has atleast shed some weight but I agree he should be around 240lbs. He is a big lump and I suppose size is one of his main assets in this fight.

You need power to stop Arreola just marching in like Vitali did. When you have that power Arreola is not as willing to walk through you. I'm not sure Adamek has the power or the foot movement to keep out of a brawl. (He may certainly have the toughness to brawl though).

He has a bail bond number on his shorts...

Easy fight for Arreola....it really is.

His promoters know how limited he is,that's why they avoid fighting top ten contenders and continue feeding him these easy fights and then they'll sacrifice him for a payday when a title shot pops up.
