WelshDevilRob
WBC to set up trust fund for Valero’s orphaned children The World Boxing Council will set up a trust fund to safeguard the future of Edwin and Jennifer Carolina Valero's children. By Graeme Bradley The World Boxing Council (WBC) have vowed to set up a trust fund for the children of Edwin Valero and his wife Jennifer Carolina Viera de Valero. The WBC lightweight champion “in recess” took his own life on Monday after being arrested for the murder of his wife. Jose Sulaiman, president of the WBC, was close to his lightweight world champion and has took the admirable steps to ensure the future of his orphaned children; eight-year-old Edwin and five-year-old Rosselin. A statement released on the official WBC website on Monday read: “The World Boxing Council declares today, April 19th, 2010, a day of world mourning, as well as it informs that the organization will begin analyzing a plan to set up a way in the creation of a fund for the education of his two little children, who were left alone in life after the passing away of both of their parents.” The body of Valero’s wife was found in the hotel room they shared at the Intercontinental Hotel in the Venezuelan city of Valencia, she had been stabbed to death. It was reported the 28-year-old confessed to the killing to hotel staff but later retracted that during police interrogations. The fighter, known as ‘El Inca’, committed suicide by hanging himself using his own clothes while being detained in a cell. The WBC paid tribute to the fighter, who suffered from alcohol and drug addiction and psychological problems for which he was being treated. “Jose Sulaiman, World Boxing Council President, and all the members of the organization, are deeply saddened, moved and in sorrow due to the tragedy that took place regarding the case of WBC Lightweight world champion, Edwin Valero, who committed suicide in his cell after having killed his wife,” the statement read. “Edwin Valero will remain in the 300 years of history of boxing as the only boxer who as a world champion had a professional career of 27 knockouts in 27 fights for a 100 per cent of KOs; Vitali Klitschko is second to him, with a 97.1 “Valero was very close to the World Boxing Council president and many of its members, who witnessed the happy years of the fighter when he won his Lightweight world title on April 4th, 2009, and when he defended such title last February 6th, in Monterrey, where he was joined by his wife and two little children for two weeks, showing a behaviour and a humanitarian sense that were very far from what happened.” Source: www.stv.com
Wheelchair
What's more of a shame is that something couldn't have been done to prevent the tragic events that took place. Maybe the WBC could have been a little more pro-active beforehand in getting help for Valero?

Skav
Nice to see something authoritive in boxing doing something like this but we'll see if they keep to their word. If it's true then the WBC have to be commended after their tarnished reputation.
Faulks
Mmm we shall see if they follow it through or if they are just jumping on the publicity which sounds bad but wouldn't put it past them
