selij
Former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO’s) is now being trained by Virgil Hunter for Berto’s fight against Jesus Soto Karass (27-8-3, 17 KO’s) next month on July 27th at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. Berto is hoping that Hunter can get his career back on the tracks after a 12 round unanimous decision loss to Robert “The Ghost’ Guerrero last November. The defeat was Berto’s 2nd loss in his last 3 fights and a clear sign that there are some serious problems with Berto’s game. Berto said to ESPN, “I know I have all the talent in the world. Now it’s time to fine-tune the skill. Virg is someone I’ve known since I was a kid…we’re testing things out with this fight and seeing where things go.” Is the hard hitting Berto washed up lads? How often do we see this? It's like when Roach was on a roll and everybody lined up to get into the Wild Card. A Trainer is a Trainer and NOT a Magician, some of these guys think the hottest trainer can perform miracles. My guess is that Berto is expecting Virgil to "walk on water" and transform him into something he's not, fighters often are delusional in that respect when they're grabbing at straws. Andre might be in that boat.

Virgil can work on new things in the gymn with these Guys and improve aspects but he is never going to make a significant difference with every fighter he takes under his wing. Virgil has said himself that his methods need to be indoctrinated into a fighter from an early age to be of use, althought it seems easier to ignore that fact for some, although I guess dependant on the style of a fighter he could adapt! Well, at least HE realizes it and isn't letting his ego get the best of him. There's really only so much a Trainer can do when you get right down to it. Yeah, that's what I like about him, he's won a couple Trainer of the Year awards but seems to have let it go to his head.
