mofo2
WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22KOs) is open to the idea of facing Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31KOs) later in the year. On June 22, Broner will move up by two weight divisions to challenge WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7KOs). Maidana is highly ranked, at #2 by the WBA, and holds the WBA Continental title at 147. Following last Saturday's TKO victory over Josesito Lopez at the Home Depot Center, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said he was very interested in matching Maidana against the winner of Broner-Malignaggi later in the year. "I didn't see [Maidana's win over Lopez], but I heard he did get a victory. I didn't see it but Maidana is Maidana. Everybody knows what Maidana bring to the table, but we're worrying about Paulie Malignaggi right now. If the best fight for Adrien Broner after this fight is Maidana then Maidana will get it," Broner said. WelshDevilRob
Re: Broner up to facing Maidana Everything seems to be pointing at a Broner vs Maidana fight. Its a good fight and I hope it comes off.
davemurphy
Re: Broner up to facing Maidana He starts off by mentioned TWICE how he didn't see Maidana-Lopez. How long would that have taken him before opening his mouth, an hour? I would think that if he was serious, then he'd have at least done that much. It almost sounds like he's trying to get out ahead of the PR by suggesting he's interested in the fight before people start demanding it of him, do we trust him on this? Stay Tuned. mofo2
Re: Broner up to facing Maidana Let's see how he gets on vs Paulie first, because Maidana would likely beat him up if he struggles with the step up in weight!

Good point, as much as I don't like featherfisted Paulie's chances, it's still a fight that's no gimme for Broner.......we should wait and see what happens. We've seen bigger busts than Broner before.

brooklynbrawler
Re: Broner up to facing Maidana Malignaggi has a fairly light frame though - he's not really got the build to "bully" Broner, even at welterweight and coupled with a very low KO ratio, it doesn't bode too well for him. I still wouldn't write off Paulie, but I have to say that Broner is a heavy favourite for me. This is 100% a handpicked opponent, or he would never have entertained the idea of moving to welterweight. The thing is, if worst comes to worst and he does lose, he can just wheel out the weight excuse and move bnack down with not much damage done, yet if he wins against arguably the weakest champ in the division, all of a sudden he's going to be billed as a hot-shot who can weight-hop at his leisure... It's a very cynical ploy by Broner and his team.
davemurphy
Re: Broner up to facing Maidana Precisely Dave, everyone assumes he will handle heavier fighters, I will reserve judgement! Mofo- Exactly. In fact, Paulie is last opponent I'd choose to make a statement about his being able to handle a welterweight's power, so I'm going to hold off judgement regardless of the outcome next Saturday.
