Canelo confident he can beat Floyd

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez says he knows Floyd Mayweather Jr’s fighting style well after studying him in great deal over the years and Canelo feels very confident that he’ll beat him on September 14th in their big, big fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canelo is quoted as saying "I am going to prepare like never in my life because I will win that day and I will shock the world.”

Canelo confident he can beat Floyd

Well, that makes one of us

Lol, I agree.

He has 40 wins and is young so is likely to be extremly confident. He is used to fighting infront of cameras and big crowds but the reality of the situation will hit him when Floyd lands a jab. The realisation that he has not fought anything in the same league and that Matthew Hatton doesn't prepare you for Floyd Mayweather Jnr.

It's gonna be some education the same that Victor Ortiz couldn't cope with.

Rob-

It's funny (to me at least) the number of people that seem to be overlooking the "big fight experience" advantage for Mayweather. I recall Tommy Hearns talking about the shock of driving down the Vegas strip and seeing his name in giant letters on the Ceasar's Palace marquee pre-Leonard and the pressure he felt, Canelo's had a few big fights but never been involved in THE fight. It's a totally different animal and one that all the preparation in the world can't simulate, you simply have to go through it. I'll be stunned if Alvarez isn't in awe of his surroundings and can work past the distractions/pressures.

Regardless of how he performs in defeat or victory, he has put to bed that he was being protected though Dave!

Depends whether he was being protected until he could get a Mayweather fight and rake in the serious wonga.

Very true. No one can be called over protected once they have signed to face the best fighter in the World.

I suppose there was an element of it before though he beat plenty of other prospects, who maybe only had one loss, on the way up.

His last 10 fights have hinted at name recognition rather than difficult fight but he has plenty proved himself with the Austin Trout win.

With regards to taking the Mayweather fight, its a win-win situation. If, he loses its no shame and he is going to earn an absolute fortune. Plus, he is so young that he will comeback and get better. If he wins then he has it all - financially and interms of respect.

I won't argue with you there, there's no way you can spin this so that he's still being protected, they took that one right off the table.

Trout was a fight he coud not afford to lose, any remote credibility he had gained in some quarters would have been shot, however I've always felt there has been too much expectancy on him, let's remember he is still a kid honing his craft regardless of him having the fight record of a veteran...I still wonder wether he will get any credit if he was to defeat Floyd though!

I know what your saying, and I agree that I thought they layed a whole lot of premature expectations on his young shoulders, but it's impossible to think that he won't get credit for this one, it's the biggest fight in the sport against this generations best fighter. Just curious, and of course we're speaking of a hypothetical result here, but what would you expect the denial of credit to rest on? Floyd's age? The weight difference? Floyd's fighting twice in a four month span?

--- Matthew Hatton didn't take a dive like Ortiz did.

It's not Canelo's fault he's ahead of the Floydy timeline at the same age and is the largest, strongest prime fighter Floydy ever faced, yet gets little American credit. Look for more Mr. Chickenman style in hopes Floydy can survive to move on through his 6 fight schedule. We'll have to see what the ref allows Floydy to get away with and if the judges are still in Hayman's pocket. Oscar is going to have to swing his weight around in favor of Canelo, so I would favor a probable tie to move each on down the road unless.....

IF Floydy choses to fight, we don't know the details of the fight, gloves, rehydration limit, ring size, ect, but merely put him in the typical Mexican cockfight ring that Alvarez grew up in, it would be amazing how quickly the myth of Money would go up in smoke as he left a little greasespot on the canvas.

You are probably right Dave, the credit will come his way, however for all the above reasons I would expect any credit to be limited...especially as far as the Floyd hugging sect go!

Oscars probably going to have the cards stacked in his protege, Alvarez favour. Alot, more money to be made on the 20 year old kid who takes Mayweathers unbeaten record than on an ageing Floyd.

Floyd's going to need a knock-out.

I kind of wonder about that. We've never seen Floyd lose before (everyone who's still arguing Castillo 1 will yell "I object, Your Honor" at this point in the proceedings) and I'm not sure just what the reaction from Floyd fans will be. I think they'll probably "follow the leader" and if it comes via the way of the scorecards, then I suspect it won't go over all that well. We just don't know until we cross that Bridge.............assuming we ever do.

Floyd is gifted undoubtedly so the idea of Defeat for his fans is probably far from their thoughts, but if he does ever get defeated for me it will come at the hands of a fighter like Canelo who will trade but is also patient!

It'll be interesting to see the fight details worked out between Shaeffer (GBP) and Al Haymon/Leonard Ellerbee (Mayweather), given that they are used to working together of late. IMO, Haymon is a bit better at securing favorable conditions, even though I think Shaeffer SHOULD carry more weight. Love him or hate him, Haymon is better at getting things done and protecting his fighters interest.
