Scott Quigg signs for Matchroom

This might make a showdown with Frampton complicated...hope not.

Bolton Super bantamweight Scott Quigg (25-0) is the latest star boxer to sign promotional terms with Matchroom Boxing, and will appear on the June 29 bill in his hometown. Quigg, 24, has endured a frustrating spell out of action since producing a career-best performance against Rendall Munroe on the undercard of Ricky Hatton’s Manchester Arena comeback. He is currently self-managed after recently splitting with manager Paul Speak, and now leaves the Hatton Promotions stable.

Quigg, 24, said: "I've had one fight in a year so it's about getting the momentum going and looking to make waves in the division again.

"No-one sees how hard I train, no-one sees the effort and dedication that I put in to get to the top. I came into boxing wanting to be a World champion, I don't want to settle at British or European - I've come in to be the best. You might need a bit of luck here and there but I think I have the ability and I know I have the desire and dedication to make it happen."

Promoter Eddie Hearn said: "He is on the cusp of challenging for a world title, and with the backing of Matchroom Sport and Sky Sports we believe he’ll get there and stay there for a long time."

A mouthwatering matchup with European champion Carl Frampton (16-0) has been talked about for some time. But with Frampton leaving the Matchroom stable two weeks ago to be jointly promoted by his manager Barry McGuigan and promoter Frank Warren, it seems unlikely this will happen anytime soon as both fighters pursue world honours.

Re: Scott Quigg signs for Matchroom

Funny how Frampton split from Hearn and Quigg is signed up almost immediately.

I'm actually getting a bit sick of all the decent British fighters being snapped up by Matchroom.

It's not healthy to have one promoter having so much power and being the sole promoter Sky will deal with.

Bit of a nonsense and though he seems like a decent guy, in the long term, we might be viewing him as the new Frank Warren rather than a good thing for boxing, like he has proven to be to date.

Yea, Hearn has taken a leaf out of Oscar's book, trying to become the alpha and omega of boxing in Britain. But he went too far in denying McGuigan to co-promote Frampton, why did he have to do that? Its just ONE fighter ffs!

And that's entirely down to Sky and their insistence on dealing with Hearn alone.

It's okay to mock the guy for not having much left, but he tried to make a good go of the promotion and snapped up several good fighters and did about as much as he could before the Matchroom juggernaut put paid to that and his stable.

How many times have we seen a TV network fall into this trap??? You deal with one promoter exclusively and you get burned. It's one of things that's universal in the sport. Showtime when it only dealt with Don King in the nineties got burned, HBO started getting burned when it was leaning mostly on Arum fights, then they pretty much did the same thing when they started leaning too heavily on Golden Boy and then Al Haymon fighters, now it's Showtime that playing that lineup (complete with a head of boxing programming that actually used to work for Golden Boy, Stephan Espinoza). Look at the problems ITV, Setanta, Sky, etc. have had over the years, and in most cases at least part of the problem, in some cases MOST of the problem, has been over reliance on one particular promoter (usually at the expense of others). The bottomline is that the healthy boxing network deals with all promoters the same way and views everything one-fight-at-a-time. Don't get into bed with one particular promoter or you'll find yourself in a bad marriage, in terms of TV boxing, monogamy ISN'T a virtue.

Re: Scott Quigg signs for Matchroom

How many fighters does Hatton still have left in his stable?

The notable ones would be Rabchenko (on the verge of a world title fight)

Adam Etches (promising prospect who sells plenty of tickets)

Damien Hooper (top amateur from down under)

and if the rumour is true Rex Tso is likely to sign with him in the near future

The only men to blame for the Quigg v Frampton fight not taking place are Barry and Carl. Hearn had been long rumoured to be seeking Quigg's signature which would have made the bout incredibly easy to make.
