BoztheMadman
Remember this guy? He was one of those outsider heroes, lost a few fights pretty early on, was given no chance against Daniel Zaragoza and made a good performance in their first fight where he dropped Zaragoza in the 9th and lost a split decision and then stopped Zaragoza in the second fight. He defended the title once before losing to Zaragoza in the rubbermatch. His partying and cocaine intake pretty much ruined his career. One might wonder how much more he was capable of accomplishing had it been different. Unfortunately, in 1995 Banke was diagnosed with AIDS. This is a very good article on both Banke, Zaragoza and their trilogy. http://www.belovedonslaught.com/2011/09/random-classics-daniel-zaragoza-vs-paul.html Edited June 1, 2013 by BoztheMadman
WelshDevilRob
Re: Paul Banke When you mentioned him in the shoutbox - the name didn't register. Now I see his name with Daniel Zaragoza I have a vague recall. Zaragoza is the boxer who was a champion when pretty old?

Well yes, he was almost 40 when he finally lost his last belt...but he looked even older because he has a very unattractive face. :tongue1:
davemurphy
Re: Paul Banke Rob and Boz- Yes, Daniel Zarragoza had a "face only a mother could love" and his case, I'm not even sure about her  Seriously though, I do agree that it always made him look older than he was, if you look at fights he had with Harold Petty back in the early eighties, he's in his mid-twenties and already looks 40. When he was fighting McCullough when he actually WAS 40, he looked to be about 55.
selij
Re: Paul Banke when he actually WAS 40, he looked to be about 55. That's because he had a particularly heavy paper round as a boy.

Rofl? Ok, back to the man of the subject-Paul Banke himself. Have any of you seen one of his fights before, both the Zaragoza trilogy and the others?
