Calls for Best of British clash

Recommended Posts

NATHAN Cleverly has challenged Carl Froch to a best of British world title fight and has even offered to drop down a weight to make the contest happen.

Froch retained his IBF super-middleweight title against Mikkel Kessler in London last Saturday with a unanimous points decision.

Cleverly has won four successful defences of his world light-heavyweight title and taken his professional unbeaten record to 26 fights.

Froch angered Cleverly in the build-up to his last victory after criticising the Welshman’s decision to spar with Kessler in Denmark.

The most pressing concern for the 35-year-old from Nottingham is to exact revenge against the only other fighter to better him brilliant American Andre Ward.

But Cleverly has used his Twitter account to call out Froch. Cleverly tweeted “Two British World Champions. Lets make this fight happen @Carl_Froch. We can even do it at Super-Middleweight. #BritishDustUp

Re: Calls for Best of British clash

The thought occurs that it's always Cleverly himself making the running - he's the one calling Froch out, he's the one talking about Best-of-British cards, weight limits etc. If I were him I'd be having a good think about what I was paying my manager and promoter for...

100% agree.

Warren has done well for many of his fighters, and landed some big fight opportunities for them over the years.

He threw Chisora in with Haye, Fury, Vitali, Helenius among others...

He landed most of the biggest British fighters in the past 20 years, their world title tilts and in more cases than not, their biggest fights.

The only time he seems to want to wrap people in cotton wool and drag out mock title reigns is when he doesn't have the confidence that they'll deliver the goods.

Is that what we're seeing here?

Is he just talking a good game alongside Cleverly to keep the money flowing in, before he hands him to the lions?

Or is he waiting to find evidence of a top fighter well on the decline to try and keep public opinion onside?

I suspect that's why we hear the Hopkins talk constantly from them...a guy who doesn't have a high punch volume, and knocks very few people out is going to lose to a high volume puncher with fast hands more often than not...

Either way, in terms of management and promotion, he's done very, very little for Cleverly in terms of anything concrete, bar working with him to get a mandatory position...something he could have done with any promoter.

In the past, the promoter has milked the title of his fighters like Calzaghe and Hatton - it is a tried and tested formula that has worked for him for many years. I think he has had cashflow problems in the last year or so, so has been limited in what he can do. He seems to be turning the corner, with the signing of Frampton and staging larger shows again.

Hopefully, this will lead to Nathan getting the opportunity to face top opposition - the fighter wants to and you can't fault him for loyalty. He's still young, so has time on his side and he is becoming a more rounded fighter, with experience.

I'm hoping that the Kovalev fight becomes a reality, as no-one could fault fighter or promoter, if that comes off. I'd also, like to see the Breahmer fight.
