ABERDARE-born Nathan King has hit out at Olympic gold medallist James DeGale by insisting “he is not as talented as people make out.”

Last month’s points defeat to DeGale on the Amir Khan undercard topped off a difficult year for King, who has now failed to win any of his last six fights, with his last victory coming against Neil Tidman three years ago.

But King said: Before the fight he (DeGale) was telling me that he was going to knock me out.

“I couldn’t believe it. No-one else has done yet, so I don’t know why he thought he was going to.

“He has received a lot of publicity since his gold medal in Beijing, but I can tell you now, he’s not what people make him out to be.”

But the 28-year-old admits he must step it up in 2010 after losing a unanimous points to DeGale in Newcastle.

“I know myself that there is so much work I need to do,” he said.

“But it’s very difficult because I have a full-time job and a family that I need to look after.”

Speaking after his victory over King, DeGale said: “When you are fighting someone like Nathan King, you need a few rounds to break them down.

“You could see I was starting to get to him at the end of the fourth.

“I think I would have stopped him if it had been a six-rounder.”

DeGale won his first five pro fights in 2009 after turning professional following his middleweight gold at Beijing.

He said: “I was a bit shaky at first but, apart from that, I think my first year has been great.

“People expect big things, but I think I have been backing it up over the last eight or nine months.

“I would give myself six out of 10, maybe five out of 10, but there is much more to come.”

Nathan King might disagree somewhat.
