Karmazin Wins comeback from behind Thriller

By Michael Norby: In an IBF middleweight world title eliminator, former 154lb champion Roman Karmazin scraped himself off the deck to record an unlikely victory after he knocked out explosive Colombian puncher Dionisio Miranda on Friday night at The Civic Auditorium in Glendale, California, USA.

This was a make or break fight for 37-year-old Karmazin 40-3-1 (26), who has now rattled off four straight wins since losing by TKO against Alex Bunema two years ago. The aging Russian seemed to have met more than his match this evening, however, in the shape of the fire-fisted Miranda 20-5-2 (18).

The Russian was stunned several times in the contest and found himself on the floor in the ninth as his chances, and indeed his boxing career, seemed to be evaporating. The gritty former champion exploded in the tenth, though, and, after knocking Miranda to the deck with a one-two, he finished the fight with a flush straight right hand seconds later.

In the opening round, Miranda was clearly loading up in an attempt to land his much feared right hand; seemingly the only real weapon in his war chest. Karmazin was able to anticipate a majority of those raids and scored with sharp combinations thrown effectively from distance.

The Colombian fought brightly in the second, however, and he controlled the action with his jab and backed up Karmazin regularly throughout the round. The Russian connected with a handful of counter punches, but his opponent was getting closer to landing his right hand with force having only just misjudged his range on occasion.

Indeed, Miranda buckled his opponent with a huge overhand right early in the third, but reckless, one-dimensional finishing combined with a dogged effort by Karmazin to overcome the peril led to the Russian mounting a comeback of sorts and negotiating his way out of the round.

Karmazin was able to avoid the Colombian’s signposted right hand in the fourth and he shot off flurries of punches every time Miranda lunged forward. A clash of heads late in the round opened a nasty gash above the left eye of Miranda who was clearly becoming a one-trick pony as the fight progressed.

In the middle rounds, Karmazin continued to make his man miss and he scored with opportunistic little combinations on the inside. The Russian rattled Miranda late in the sixth and again in the seventh and he was beginning to wrestle control of the fight away from the bloodied Colombian; whose most dangerous asset was easily avoided.

After breezing through the eighth, however, Karmazin got sloppy a round later and was dumped by a huge right hand with a full two minutes remaining in the round. Miranda followed up a lot more effectively this time and he mixed up his punches – shooting thudding shots to the body and head of the veteran in an effort to finish his dazed opponent.

Amazingly, however, Karmazin again managed to karaoke his way through the round and he mounted a famous comeback in the tenth frame. A one-two with a minute to go caused Miranda, after a delayed reaction, to crumple to the floor. The Colombian got up, but he was clearly stunned and a wide-eyed Karmazin pounced – strafing his man with a slew of punches before a straight right hand dumped him to the canvas again, causing referee James Jen-Kin to wave off the contest.

Time of stoppage: 2:34 RD10
