Faulks
MANILA, Philippines - The father of former World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Miguel Cotto Jr. of Puerto Rico reportedly passed away on Sunday. Elnuevodia.com, a media outlet in Puerto Rico, reported that Miguel Cotto Sr. died from a heart attack while driving in his hometown of Caguas. Police said Cotto stopped his car along the road to San Lorenzo and asked for help while carrying an oxygen tank. The 57-year-old Cotto was said to have long been suffering from heart problems and asthma. "We know he had several ailments and he had an oxygen machine on when he got out of his car for help. It is believed he died of a heart attack. When the ambulance arrived, he was already dead," Caguas police officer Emily Rodriguez told Elnuevodia.com. Local media in Puerto Rico reported that Douglas Melendez, a young bartender, was the last person to see Cotto Sr. alive. "I did not know he was the father of Miguel Cotto. He asked me to call an ambulance and I called," Melendez told Elnuevodia.com. Melendez claimed that he called 911 more than 4 times but the ambulance never came. He said the elder Cotto passed away at around 3:15 p.m. on Sunday. Cotto Sr.'s body was reported to be lifted at around 4 p.m., and was moved to the Institute of Forensic Sciences for autopsy purposes. His son, meanwhile, asked for time to mourn for his family's loss. "We appreciate all of the tokens of affection and sympathy. It is a very painful moment for me and my entire family. I hope that everyone respect our request for space to overcome this difficult moment," Cotto Jr. was quoted as saying at Boxingscene.com.
