Ricky eyes Marquez clash

RICKY HATTON has set his sights on Juan Manuel Marquez following Miguel Cotto's defeat to Manny Pacquiao.

In an exclusive chat with SunSport last week, Hatton revealed he would jump at the chance to take on Cotto if he conquered pound-for-pound king Pacquiao.

But it now appears the Hitman favours a clash with Marquez for a potential comeback fight.

Gareth Williams, chief executive of Hatton Promotions, said: "If Ricky does carry on it would be an ideal fight for him to take on Marquez.

TRADING BLOWS ... Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez

"He is an elite fighter, just like Ricky, who will want to challenge the best.

"It makes far more sense to fight Marquez than some of the other names that have been bandied about."

Marquez last boxed in September when he was on the wrong end of a unanimous points decision against the returning Floyd Mayweather Jnr.

The defeat was the fifth of his 56-fight career so a high-profile bout with Hatton would provide the Mexican with the perfect opportunity to get back on track.

Hatton, 31, is still weighing up his future after his brutal two-round demolition at the hands of Pacquiao in May.

The fight makes sense for both unless there is a chance of Marquez vs Manny 3 which Roach has mentioned. (Though I doubt it would happen)

Marquez is a legend and a big name - he lost to Floyd but he was the much smaller man. Hatton would be the bigger man against Marquez but I'd still like Ricky to take a smaller fight before - just to get the confidence back.

If Ricky decides to go back in at or near the top this is the safest fight for him he will have weight advantage but that's all Marquez is a skillful boxer & will give Ricky plenty of trouble, If he takes a warm up fight first it's a difficult choice as to who he fights he looked shot against Lazcano but came back well against the light punching Maliqnaggi & wasn't in there long enough for us to tell what he has left against Manny.

For me I'd rather Ricky called it a day I've no wish to relive the scenes at the MGM

I'd agree with that, the safest option available without risking getting slated for fighting a nobody. I just can't see him making the weight for this, he looks like shit just now, and he doesn't have the luxury of Kerry on his case this time round.

If he's planing on this fight for next summer he's giving himself every chance to lose the weight in a more controlled way rather than the three months battle with the scales of late, it will be interesting to find out who will be in charge of the training it's really needs to be someone that Ricky has respect for, This could well be the last throw of the dice & he must dedicate himself full on if he wants that retirement win
