Ricky Hatton’s comeback likely for November 24th

By Michael Collins: Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32 KO’s) is expected to be making his comeback on November 24th at the MEN Arena, according to the Manchester Evening News. There’s talk of Hatton having met with the British Boxing Board of Control to get licensed to fight. Hatton additionally has lot a lot of weight and this has further fueled speculation that the 33-year-old Hatton will soon be back in the ring. Hatton will be making an announcement this Friday about his plans for the November 24th fight.

His fighters Anthony Crolla, Martin Murray, Rendall Munroe and Scott Quigg will be on the November 24th card.

If Hatton does make a comeback on November 24th he’ll likely be matched against a less than dangerous opponent. It’s been three years since he last fought, and he was knocked out in only two rounds in his last fight against Manny Pacquiao. Hatton needs to take things slowly if he wants to find success with his comeback. His chin might not be the same, and we could see Hatton knockout out again if he faces someone too good for him.

Hatton’s chances of success in his comeback are limited. When he held the light welterweight title the division was incredibly weak with few talented fighters. Kostya Tszyu was an old fighter by the time Hatton beat him, and once you got past Tszyu, there wasn’t much competition for Hatton. A young Tszyu would obviously have destroyed Hatton. Now things are completely in the division. You’ve got Brandon Rios, Amir Khan, Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse, Olusegun Ajose, Mike Alvarado, Lamont Peterson and Juan Manuel Marquez. I don’t think Hatton could beat any of those guys, even in his prime. And if Hatton moves up to welterweight it would be even worse for him because there are too many good fighters at that weight for him.

If Hatton is merely looking to fight scrubs until landing a big money cash out fight against the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao, then I think he’ll be successful at that. But as far as competing with the best fighters at 140 and 147, I don’t give him a ghost a of chance. Hatton had his day, and he’s older now and both the light welterweight and welterweight divisions have better fighters now.

Let's hope that he reconsiders and also that if he does then this will be the LAST of these rumored comebacks we have to deal with. We went through this routine with Lennox when he hung them up and then kept hinting at a return, but in LL's case he left while on top and also with an attractive fight (Vitali 2) hanging in the balance...........we have neither of those two things with Ricky. Coming back against an opponent along the lines of what I suspect they will choose shouldn't whet anyone's appetite, I wouldn't think.

Hatton should stay retired, he best days were behind him before he got ko'ed by Mayweather and PAC, it's one thing losing 4 stone, totally another thing getting in the ring and fighter younger faster and better fighters than yourself. God help Ricky Hatton, hope he does not end up in a wheelchair or dead.

Ricky Hatton WILL unveil 24th November comeback Friday

As originally reported on Livefight.com, that Ricky Hatton was back in training for a proposed winter comeback, we can again crack the truth of the press conference this Friday.

The conference WILL definitely announce the return of 'The Hitman' on November 24th at the Manchester MEN arena. Hatton has also successfully applied for his boxing licence.

Hatton-promoted Scott Quigg, Rendall Munroe and Martin Murray are expected to be chief support to the event, the first fight since Hatton vs Pacquiao back in April 2009. Their ticket allocation is reported to be limited, on account of the profile of the main event.

Hatton (45-2, 32ko) will be returning at Welterweight, and his choice of trainers is currently down to two Manchester based operators.

Paulie Malignaggi (31-4, 7ko) was in the running to fight Ricky, for the American's WBA welterweight title, but has since arranged to fight at Brooklyn's Barclay centre against Pablo Cano (25-1, 19ko) and if successful that fight will likely be made for 2013 should Ricky be victorious upon his return.

There's the likes of Brook and Khan along with Witter, all of which are interesting fights. But truth be told, I'm not fussed about his come back.

I'm more bothered about his maniacal fans chanting that tedious "there's only one ricky hatton" tune.

True on that, but the one thing that I HAVE missed is the entrance to Blue Moon, which we didn't see at the end of the career. I'm not overly thrilled that the goal seems to be securing a fight with Paulie Malignaggi, but the good side to that is that featherfisted Paulie presents no longterm health risk.

I'd have picked a peak Hatton over all those guys other than Marquez and possibly Matthysse.

Can see a Marquez fight coming off tbh...

I'm both disappointed and excited by his comeback though (which he has now confirmed).

I think he had unfinished business after the Pacquiao fight, as it's no shame to lose to the 2 best fighters on the planet, by any means.

It seemed his punch resistance had all but gone in that bout though and I don;t want to see him coming back just to lose to a B-class fighter, which could very easily happen.

If you look at the beltholders at 140lbs, few of them would trouble Ricky at his peak.

I do miss having that massive UK fighter that transcended the sport. He's one of the few fighters my non-boxing fan mates would have sat up until 4am to watch and probably had the biggest support of any UK fighter in recent years.

Not sure that's certain at all - Tszyu was vulnerable to the marauding style, that was shown by Vince Philips, and I think Hatton had the ideal style to beat him, given he was able to take Tszyu's shots.

Was in the gym a couple of hours ago and the head trainer was talking about this. I asked if it was true and he said that he'd heard through his boxing contacts that it was.

As I posted on a related thread I don't really want to see this. Hatton is a wealthy man, but the riches he seeks can't be bought. I hope it goes as well as it can. The end of his previous career ended not in the ring, but in a hotel room - fat, with another woman, shoving powders up his nose. He said that this was due to depression, I wish him every happiness.

Be interesting to see who the comeback opponent is? Hopefully, nothing too testing for a comeback bout. There is alot of rust to shake off.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it be someone like Vivian Harris or Nate Campbell. A familiar name but who couldn't have beaten Hatton at their best and who's WELL on the downside and shouldn't be fighting themselves. Then again, considering the amount of rust your talking, even that might be too risky and they could go with an out-and-out tomato can...........but I'm not sure if they could sell that.

Bunce: Comeback hinges on state of Hatton's head

Ricky Hatton, the former two-weight world champion, has confirmed he intends to return to boxing on November 24.

Hatton's most recent fight, a devastating second-round knockout defeat to Manny Pacquiao, was more than three years ago. He holds a 45-2 record, suffering the other loss against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

He was stripped of his licence by the British Boxing Board of Control in September 2010 after being found guilty of misconduct, then confirmed his retirement in July 2011.

However, in recent months he has shed a significant amount of weight in order to get back in fighting shape, and has now been granted a British licence - pending the successful completion of a medical.

Hatton proved he was world class in 2005 with a stunning upset victory over Kostya Tszyu to claim the IBF light-welterweight crown. In 2006 he won a world title at a second weight, overcoming Luis Collazo for the WBA welterweight strap.

Couldn't agree more.

I'll think about it when the oppo is announced but until the wallet stays shut.

I haven't read anything on a TV deal? Please tell me this isn't going to be on Sky. If so all they have done is forced a retired fighter out of retirement, to do something that could hurt him, in order to get his stable back on the telly and that would be disgraceful.

I hope its not on Sky. They dropped his stable of fighters and shouldn't be allowed to get back in to benefit. Hopefully, the talk of ITV is true or Boxnation get in there.

Hatton hasn't fought for 3 years since that crushing Ko defeat to Manny. I hope people don't expect him to be fighting a World Class opponent. He has alot of ring rust to shake off.

Hatton on comeback opponent

"If I come back against a journeyman, I'm not going to fight for world titles," Hatton said to Sky Sports News. "I need to come back against someone who is world ranked and who will put me in a position to challenge for world title. It will be a live opponent.

"There are British welterweight rivals in Amir Khan and Kell Brook, and I'd be a liar if I didn't say I'd love a run at those two. November 24 is the key to everything. I can say I can come back just as strong, but I don't expect anyone to believe me until I get out there and perform.

"The dream is redemption. And if a world title comes with that, then so be it. I've come to be a world champion again."

Meanwhile, Hatton has scotched rumours he is only stepping back into the ring to boost his promotional company. "People saying I'm coming back to get my lads work - I've never heard so much old rubbish in all my life," he said.

The plan is to get somebody ranked so Ricky can fight Malignaggi next year, I have no doubt about it.

At first I wasn't too interested in his comeback but I've been doing more thinking and there could be some good fights out there including Bradley, Khan and Brook. Maybe Marquez too.
