We’ve just had a fantastic Olympics where we’ve seen grainy images of people doing the long jump in 1968 or whenever, and I’m sick of seeing re-runs of Glenn lifting that belt in a social club. “What I want is a modern day champion in the North East,” that’s the message from Newcastle’s Steve Wraith (pictured) as he prepares to make his promotional debut at the city’s O2 Academy on September 9. The show, headlined by local fighter Akash Hussein and featuring an undercard of North East boxers will be the first in Newcastle for a few years and Wraith, who cut his teeth on the white collar circuit but who learned the pro game with the help of Sunderland’s Phil Jeffries, is positive that big things are in store for the region’s boxing fans. “My ultimate goal is to continue the good work that Phil Jeffries has been doing but on this side of the water. Although there isn’t a rivalry between Newcastle and Sunderland in boxing, it would be great to get a John Davison against a Billy Hardy situation, where you could fill a stadium like St James’ Park or the Stadium of Light with a British title fight. Sheils Posted September 7, 2012 Share Posted September 7, 2012 Yes, I'd like to see someone from the north-east lift a world title belt. John Davison was outclassed against Steve Robinson, though I had Billy Hardy winning against Orlando Canizales when they fought in Sunderland. Other than Glen there has been a drought - for a while.
