Felix Sturm vs Daniel Geale Preview

Written by Jon Campbell

On the 1st September a great month of boxing opens in Germany with a Middleweight unification bout with both the IBF and WBA (super) titles on the line. The fighters will be Felix Sturm (37-2-2) of Germany and Daniel Geale (27-1) of Australia. A fight like this is great to see in my opinion as it is the only way of determining who outranks who at the pinnacle of the sport and I hope in the coming years we see more of it.

Felix Sturm is no shy face to world-class boxing; he is a two-time Middleweight world champion who has not lost since 2006. He previously was the WBO champ almost decade ago, a title which he lost to Dela Hoya in a razor thin UD, one which many see as controversial. Unfortunately since this he has not risen to notability in a way which his talent warrants as he became very reluctant to leave his homeland of Germany.

Since regaining his WBA title in a rematch against the Spaniard Javier Castillejo, Sturm has been on the giving end of some disappointing decisions, his most recent draw to Manchester-based Martin Murray was scorned by much of the British press as being a joke and unfair.

Putting controversy aside, Sturm has a very good skill set which surpasses his name and is capable of rubbing shoulders with the best on any given night. His performance against countrymen Sebastian Zbik in his last bout really demonstrated this. Despite a slow start he surprisingly outboxed the experienced, savvy Zbik, ending the bout with an early stoppage in the 9th. Regardless of the ending it was clear to see Sturm had the better of the former title holder.

He is a very well-rounded fighter with an adaptive style and very little in terms of weaknesses. His jab is probably the thing about him which stands out as it is very effective. He utilises this to his advantage in a number of ways, such as a measuring stick moving forward or to keep his opponent off-balance.

One noteworthy flaw to Sturm's game is his punching power, Sturm has very little zip in his punches which has not greatly affected his results but has made bouts go on longer than they should have.
