Flyweight Prospect Watch: Froilan Saludar

The Philippines is one of the hottest countries for fast rising boxing prospects with a host of fighters who look capable of winning world titles in the next few years and follow in the footsteps of the exciting Manny Pacquiao. Of all the emerging youngsters one of, if not the, most exciting is the hard punching Flyweight Froilan Saludar (15-0-1, 11).

 

Known as “The Sniper” due to his hard and accurate counter punches, the 23 year old Saludar has been hugely impressive since starting his professional campaign back in July 2009 when he stopped Roland Gamolo inside a round on debut. By the end of the year Saludar had moved to 4-0 (3) having added 2 more opening round T/KO's to his record. In fact only the teak tough journeyman Elbert Guardario managed to see out a round, as he survived the 4 round schedule.

 

Having had an excellent start to his career Saludar swiftly found out that he couldn't blow out all of his opponents as both Ryan Rey Ponteras and Ryan Illustrisimo survived to a decision in his first 2 bouts of 2010. It was after those bouts that Saludar suffered his solitary black mark as an early head clash lead to his fight with Brian Diano being called off inside a round, resulting in an opening round Technical Draw.

 

It wouldn't take Saludar long to put the the Diano fight behind him and just weeks later Saludar was back into the swing of things stopping Salvador Layson in 4 rounds. This stoppage victory was Saludar's first since his 3rd professional bout, some 10 months earlier and proved that, whilst he hadn't been blowing opponents out left right and centre he still hit hard enough to stop opponents. Following this win Saludar stopped the experienced Michael Romulo in 3 rounds to move to 8-0-1 (5).

 

In late 2010, in just his 10th professional contest Saludar fought for his first professional title as he took on Remuel Obidos for the WBO Asia Pacific Youth flyweight title. Obidos would last just 146 seconds before being stopped by the hard punching Saludar who moved into the WBO's top 15.

 

Early the following year Saludar added to his belt collection as he won the WBO Youth flyweight title by stopping Thai Liempetch Sor Veerapol in just 84 seconds. Saludar would also claim the WBO Asia Pacific flyweight as he stopped Gabriel Pumar in the 10th round of a tough bout that saw Saludar going much, much further than he had ever gone before. By this point Saludar was starting to receive not only great acclaim by all that had seen him, but also very lofty world rankings, including a #4 ranking with the WBO and top 15 rankings with both the IBF and WBC, with many viewing him as a nailed on champion in the making.
