This month in the Middleweight division we have an interesting situation whereby literally every title worth fighting for is either being defended by or is currently being held by a contestant in one of three fights. Two of which are happening tonight, with Sturm-Geale's IBF and WBA (super) titles being unified.

 

 

The other, not so publicised bout between WBA (regular) and IBO champ Gennedy Golovkin (23-0) and the EBU champ Grzegorz Proksa (28-1) still holds much significance. Moreover, this bout on paper appears to be potentially more fan-friendly than the other two put together.

 

 

The Kazak Golovkin has described himself as the most avoided fighter in the sport, as he claims that he has offered dozens of fighters to fight him from 154lbs all the way to 168lbs with no luck. He hopes beating the EBU champ in the USA will force the top-tier of fighters around 160lbs to seriously consider him.

 

 

Although Golovkin's resume is very below-par for a world titlist, with his most notable win being against an ageing Kassim Ouma who had lost four of his past six bouts, some of the traits he demonstrates in the ring are tremendous. The most noteworthy asset of Golovkin is his power. He has a staggering 20 Knockouts in only 23 fights professionally, giving him an 86% K.O rate.

 

 

The problem with not getting the big fights he wants to progress his name means that bigger fighters will not take him as the risk of being knocked out is not worth the gain obtained by beating him. This is the vicious circle which Golovkin is left in and he must continue his great form and force his way out of it should he wish to get in line for the winner of Martinez-Chavez Jr.

 

 

Grzegorz Proksa stands in his way and is an obvious step up for Gennedy. The tough, durable Pole has a similar fear factor to the Kazak as he also has been knockoing out his opponents for fun. He boasts 21 stoppages coming from 28 wins and can be said to have the better resume of the two. He previously held the EBU-EU title briefly, but now he has the EBU title which he won off former IBF champ Sebastian Sylvester.

 

His only loss came in losing this title to the Brit Kerry Hope by a majority decision. Even this loss is one that did not go unavenged as Proksa in his last bout 2 months ago won his title back in the 8th round.

 

 

This fight interests me as the two are clearly experienced fighters and good craftsman who have had a hard time in gaining the fights they believe they deserve, giving them something to improve. Putting two fighters of this kind together alone is enough to create fireworks. However, when taking into account the styles of the two I can assure you this will be a great fight.

 

 

To conclude, I predict chaos. The winner of the bout is extremely difficult to choose as I can practically guarantee it will not go twelve rounds and it is basically down to who gets off first. I had to choose I would give the razor-thin edge to Proksa simply because he has demonstrated better skills against better opposition.

Golovkin may not have been fighting murderers' row but I'd say Ouma and Simon were on par with Sylvester and Hope...and that's with out mentioning a word about Golovkin's amateur credentials.

Think it's on at like 3 but I've not checked, Sky Sports 2 are reshowing it in the morning on tape delay though.
