iamasadlittleboy
The WBO #3 Denis Simcic! In a recent thread I had a quick look at the WBO top 15 and guessed how Bunce would summed up those opponents, on Simcic the description was as: 3-Denis Simcic (28-1, 14)-"Highly Ranked European with a win over Tomas Adamek" Looking at his actual record: Most well known opponent=Vyacheslav Uzelkov (Uzelkov TKO3) Opponents with more than 50%=9 Opponents with more than 50% wins and over 15 wins=5 Simcic is highly rated, at least in part, for having claimed the WBO European title at 175...defeating Albanian Fatjon Murati in his last fight http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?cat=boxer&human_id=175549

brooklynbrawler
Not overly excited by either of them....Warren promised a "huge world title homecoming" for Cleverly in this contest, after what can only be described as some utter shite bouts. Seems like he's gonna fail to deliver again.... White really is a mixed bag. I've seen him looking good at times and I've seen him looking absolutely terrible. Have never seen Simcic fight, which tells you enough that it it isn't a "huge bout" by any means.
iamasadlittleboy
I'd much, much prefer it to be White who is on a really good run (Despaigne and Sukhotsky) http://www.boxingscene.com/cleverly-vs-simcic-play-cardiffs-motorpoint-oct--56518
Ton
When Warren says anything like "huge world title homecoming", what would you expect other than exactly what he's delivered? He will fleece the Sun reading masses into believing this guy is some kind of beast!
Meathead
I think both are good fights to be honest. They tried to get Shumenov but drew a blank there, for whatever reason. Dawson is tied up and Hopkins supposedly wants the big end of the wedge when it comes to pay, something Frank Warren is 100% right to refuse. Personally I think Fonfara isnt world class and there is no way that he is being risked with a fight over in Wales. My preferred fight is Chilemba but after a quick check on Boxrec I see he's fighting Erdei at the end of September. Cloud may have been an option, but just getting him in the ring, let alone in Wales, seems to be a mission in itself. Slight side note, how on earth does Boxrec have Kessler, a guy with one fight at 170 (even then he was a lb under) 4th in the world. At 168lbs sure but 170lbs! Really! iamasadlittleboy
Boxrec using a computer formula based on other results so his fights at 168 are used to make up much of his points on their system Cloud is rumoured to be fighting Murat later this year. gavpowell
I await the excuses about who they tried to get but weren't able to persuade to come to Wales to fight nobody for a belt nobody cares about for not that much money.
WelshDevilRob
Shumenov is going to fight Nicholson Poulard. Its the main reason Poulard turned down a Froch fight. Cloud is likely to defend against his mandatory Murat. One possibility is that Juergen Braehmer might be the opponent. He just signed for Sauerland. So a possibility, as Warren and Sauerland have a good working relationship. I know for definite that it won't be the No.1 Soulan Pownceby. Jean Pascal and Bernard Hopkins are free but as the announcement, is in a 4000 capacity arena then I don't expect either to be the opponent. WelshDevilRob
CLEVERLY DEFENDS TITLE AGAINST UZELKOV Welsh star Nathan Cleverly will make the fourth defence of his WBO World Light-Heavyweight title against the world ranked Ukrainian Vyacheslav Uzelkov. Undefeated Cleverly returns to Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena on Saturday 27th October where he last defended his title against Tommy Karpency in February for his Welsh homecoming with a dominating performance. The fight will be televised live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546). Vyacheslav, who's nickname is Steel Power, is based in Vinitza and is currently ranked number nine by the WBO, four by the WBA and seven by the IBF. gavpowell
Man, I have got Frank Warren's number - that's about the fourth time I've predicted exactly what was going to happen with one of his shows. I was a little off base this time because I thought Uzelkov having recently lost might not make it credible, but of course I should have known. WelshDevilRob
Cleverly to defend against Uzelkov http://www.ringnews24.com/index.php/boxing-news/64902-cleverly-to-defend-against-uzelkov.html#axzz25Q7RBBSg Promoter Frank Warren had originally agreed terms with Golden Boy Promotions for Bernard Hopkins to face Cleverly, but the American later withdrew and he's unlikely to fight again this year. Warren also offered the fight to Shumenov to put his WBA title on the line against Cleverly's WBO belt in a unification contest in Las Vegas, but his team could not get a date on Showtime until next year. A further offer was made for Shumenov to come to the UK which he declined as he refused to travel here. A huge purse was also put to IBF World Super-Middleweight Champion Carl Froch to move up a weight division which he turned down, as did Tony Bellew who rejected the offer of a rematch. Warren said, “It’s proved frustrating as we had Hopkins lined up and then he pulled out and Shumenov didn’t want to come over here to fight Cleverly, plus Froch and Bellew didn’t want to know,” “While we look to make these fights Cleverly has got to keep busy as he hasn’t fought since February and Ulezkov is a tough title defence for him,”
irondave85
How on earth was Froch ever a realistic possibility? Nottingham had already been booked for November and despite that, he was hardly going to move up and then move straight back down again to face Bute in the contractually obligated rematch. WelshDevilRob
I offered Froch £1m and Bellew is lying, says Warren Promoter Frank Warren has responded to questions raised concerning his alleged offers to boxers he'd apparently like to fight his WBO light-heavyweight champion, Nathan Cleverly. A spat via Twitter took place yesterday between Warren and Eddie Hearn, the promoter of Carl Froch and Tony Bellew, two of the boxers Warren said turned down decent offers to face Cleverly. This was followed by Hearn commenting to Boxing Scene's Shaun Brown, "I actually feel sorry for Nathan Cleverly". Warren told the same website today: "On 4th June 2012 an email was sent to Matchroom Boxing offering Carl Froch £1 million to fight Nathan Cleverly in September 2012 for the WBO Light Heavyweight Championship. "Eddie Hearn states that Carl was IBF Super-Middleweight Champion at the time this offer was made, this is correct, otherwise why would I be offering £1 million for a fighter coming off such a comprehensive loss to Andre Ward. So how Eddie can state that we knew he wouldn’t accept it is baffling as I’m sure Carl has never earned a purse (sic) despite his high profile fights. It was a serious offer, otherwise I would not have made it. "As for Tony Bellew, I made the offer personally to him at the British Boxing Board of Control in front of a solicitor, so again this offer is without question. Bellew’s tweeted comments state that no such offer was made, which is complete lie, as he states if it was made he would have taken it and would not be fighting Miranda this weekend. The offer is still open, but for him to say it wasn’t made is a lie. "Eddie states that time and time again they have said they are not interested in a fight with Nathan. I stand corrected by the only time such a fight has been declined by them is in response to my offer of 4th June 2012, when I received an email reply from Eddie 30 minutes later which stated “Thanks for the email. We will be defending our IBF Super-Middleweight title in September and have no plans to move up to LH” "True to their word they are defending their IBF Super-Middleweight title in October at the Nottingham Arena, rather than in front of 40,000 plus at the Millennium Stadium against Nathan Cleverly. (It would be great to see boxing return to the Millennium Stadium, which is a wonderful arena. The last bout staged there was Joe Calzaghe v Mikkel Kessler in November 2007, which was promoted by Sports Network Ltd. of which Warren was the Chief Executive. The Stadium subsequently claimed they were owed money by Sports Network Ltd. relating to the staging of the bout and took legal action. In May 2009, Sports Network Ltd - then in administration - was ordered by the court to pay the Millennium Stadium £143,997.79 for costs ranging from stewarding, safety and policing for this bout. No boxing has taken place at the venue since. Perhaps this is because there hasn't been a fight big enough for it since Calzaghe was in his pomp - Froch v Cleverly might indeed suit.) "I question whether Carl was ever passed the offer. "Eddie states that Nathan’s fight has no relevance to anyone – does Froch v Yusaf Mack mean anything? Mack hasn’t fought at Super-Middleweight for over FIVE years and has lost to Glen Johnson whom Froch has beaten and I’m sure Froch, a true warrior, would prefer to have big fights and big paydays." Warren made sure he got his message across to Hearn, using his own phrase against him: "So actually I feel sorry for Carl Froch who, despite his achievements has not made the millions that his super-middleweight predecessors did. "Both Nathan and I would love to make this fight and if Eddie is serious about paying Froch £2 million to fight Nathan and providing Nathan gets what he is worth, then there is no reason this fight cannot happen anytime soon. It would be a blockbuster night and certainly more interesting than Carl going to Canada and handing out another one sided beating to Lucian Bute." http://news.boxrec.com/news/2012/i-offered-froch-%C2%A31m-and-bellew-lying-says-warren
gavpowell
The only incentive for Froch would be money, and he has plenty of that, regardless of how his purses compare to Calzaghe or anyone else. After all these years, Frank still doesn't understand that fighters can be motivated by things other than money. Froch is riding high after a sensational victory and a string of fantastic fights at super-middleweight. He has existing rivalries at super-middleweight and a belt to defend. What is the point of going up now for the likes of Nathan Cleverly? Far better to stay at your usual weight, have an easy night for once and enjoy fighting for your home crowd again. I'm pretty sure that Froch fans think he would have an easy night against Cleverly. Hearn reckons he could get Froch 2 million for a Ceverly fight. Is Froch earning anywhere near 1 million for Yusuf Mack? He spent years chasing Joe Calzaghe and was frustrated, even to this day, that he got ignored. Seems to be almost a role reversal here with regards to, the younger, Cleverly chasing the fight and not being able to get it. At the end of the day, I know which fight I would rather watch in November and its not Froch vs the often beaten Yusuf Mack.
gavpowell
I'm pretty sure that Froch fans think he would have an easy night against Cleverly.. Yes, I'm sure he would, though probably not as easy as he will against Mack, since Mack is the one changing weight class. But the point is it's going up a weight, it's not going to be in his hometown, he's going to have to deal with Frank Warren and frankly why should he bother? He has plenty to occupy him at super-middleweight, as Warren knows full well.
