WelshDevilRob
Hatton ring return imminent by Ben Carey - Boxrec News Ricky Hatton is set to formally announce his boxing comeback 'within the next fortnight', according to an article in today's Daily Star newspaper. Ironically labelled as a 'shock ring return', Hatton's plans will come as no surprise to those within the trade who have been speculating for weeks that the 'Hitman's' new slimline physique is much more than a coincidence. Ricky, who will turn 34 in October, hasn't fought since he was annihilated in two rounds by Manny Pacquiao in 2009, but has noticeably shed the pounds this year after his weight ballooned to over 13st after he hung up his gloves. He is expected to initially announce a two-fight deal, starting with a mooted rematch against reigning WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi in November, whom Hatton previously stopped in eleven rounds in 2008. Hatton's comeback is expected to coincide with a new television deal for his Hatton Promotions banner, whose fighters include Martin Murray, Scott Quigg and Gary Buckland. Hatton Promotions' contract with SKY Sports, somewhat harshly, was curtailed by the broadcaster in June. Channel 5 are believed to be the likeliest destination for Hatton's bustling stable of fighters but nothing has been confirmed as yet. Interestingly, Scott Quigg's super-bantamweight rematch with Rendall Munroe has also been earmarked for November, and could well feature as the chief support to Hatton's comeback. davemurphy
This is almost turning into a "Boy who cried Wolf" scenario, we've heard it so many times that if he doesn't eventually follow through and actually take a fight, we're probably going to quit taking the reports seriously. I think he is coming back and while it may have alot to do with securing a TV deal for his promotional company. Needing a TV deal could be the excuse that he needed. I would bet on this happening. Joe Ko
Rumours for months, he is training again, also fighters everyday. The weight seems to be right down, could actually be the first time he goes into a training camp not worrying about weight, he looks in shape. I want to see him back, bigger boxing fan now and the Hatton fights when I was less of a fan of boxing, were always the best ones for me.
The_budweiser
Yesterday I read a story from a member of Team Hatton saying hes not coming back. It's about time we heard it from Ricky himself.
Sheils
I can't see it happening to be honest. I think the spark went and I doubt it will ever come back. He's a rich man and getting older day by day. His dabbling with drugs was a mistake, but I doubt he'll make another by getting back in the ring. I'm sure he'd like his last fight to be a win, but unless he's got a world title to his name people will consider any comeback as an under achievement. Rob- Yeah, I think that's got a lot to do with it, and also what makes me more skeptical when I hear these reports. It always makes you wonder if it's Ricky really wanting to come back into the Ring or just floating that idea in order to bolster his fledgling promotional company. Time will tell, and of course we're approaching the point where that prospect won't carry the weight that it once did.

Sheils- I agree and I think anyone who's a fan of Rickys probably doesn't want to see it for that reason, because as you put it "the spark is gone". His dabbling with drugs was a mistake, but I doubt he'll make another by getting back in the ring. The only trouble is that fighters tend to find it very difficult to let go - possibly this applies to other sports too, I don't know, but it's got to be agony for anyone under 50 to sit there and watch other people take the spotlight and the roar of the fans and the glory and not think "I'd love to get back out there"

We saw the return of some to the most insignificant of Heavyweights, all pursuing the same impossible dream..........and most of them you didn't even enjoy watching in their prime, much less the senior citizen version. donlevy
No smoke without fire. There's a difference between wanting to put in the effort and actually being prepared to do so.It's entirely possibly that he actually has that desire to put in the work, especially with Malignaggi winning a title. brooklynbrawler
Wasn't there an uproar not long ago when someone on here posted an old Hatton interview on RN24, and the mainstream media picked up on it, believing it to be current, and thought he was coming back...? Hatton said then that he wasn't coming back and that was only a few weeks ago. He shouldn't have to come out with the same statement every few weeks just to quash the constant rumour-mongering. It doesn;t matter how much he has been training, his punch resistance is gone. I wouldn;t mind going to see him one last time, but unless it's a soft-touch opponent, then I can't see him winning, and if that's the case, what's the point? WelshDevilRob
Hattons agent, Paul Speak has denied the rumours. While the Daily Mail reckon that he has booked the MEN for November. Malignaggi has said he isn't fighting Hatton as he has an opponent (Cueno) in October. Lovemore N'dou wants the fight.
Meathead
Whilst I would be happy with him staying retired, my position on him coming back hasn't changed. If its managed properly and is really a retirement tour, of sorts, against opposition that will stretch him (maybe even beat him) but won't repeat the scenes of his last two losses, then so be it. Truth be told he shouldn't have retired when he did. He lost to the two best fighters in the world, but especially at 140lbs at the time, he was still good enough to be deemed one of the best in the world. Not that he needs it mlol/ but he'd get my blessing for a comeback, but it MUST be managed right.
gavpowell
At the same time, it must have been incredibly hard to motivate himself for a Juan Lazcano or a Paulie Malignaggi when he'd been in with both of the best fighters in the world.
davemurphy
I agree with you guys, if he really want to continue his career, he shouldn't have retired. Losing to Pac and Floyd was something everyone else does as well, even though the loss to Pac was by devastating fashion.
WelshDevilRob
Frank Warren hinted that Hatton would be fighting on ITV. Interesting move of it happens.
Meathead
I can see ITV getting back in to Boxing if Hatton is involved. If its just his stable then I'd be surprised. I still think the most likely output is either Five or BoxNation.
gavpowell
If anyone knew what Hatton were doing, it wouldn't be Warren, I'll tell you that for nothing.
Meathead
Depends whether or not he's been in on the BoxNation negotiations. Their relationship, by no means as good as it was, is supposedly quite amicable these days so I wouldn't be surprised if they had had direct discussions about Hatton moving his stable over to BoxNation. WelshDevilRob
Surely Eurosport is an outlet as well...and Primetime have picked up the Goodwins and offered to work with others... Do Eurosport buy and show live fights these days? Only ever remember them showing replays. Bigger Better or whatever the tournament is called is probably live. Primetime is probably a good option but ITV brings the largest exposure. (along with BBC)
