Historical Research

Recommended Posts

For those that don't know me I am big into my sporting history and research.

In the past this has mainly been that of football on a local basis but a tendency to move further afield.

Since going full tilt into the filed of the sweet science my taste buds have been re-ignited with the whole history of the sport and in the past few weeks I purchased a collection of boxing memorabilia - books and magazines, that I hope will lead to some research.

What I was wondering is what people like, don't like, views on historical research, areas to stay away from, popular areas. And, if you must, just general chat about the history of the sweet science.

I am extremely interested in that of fight venues, primarily in the NE of England, but also throughout Britain.

Thanks

Peter Mann

------ Boxing history is one of the highest forms of history available to understand where the human condition came from and where we're going.

It's also more fun than other dusty, dreary histories, and it's more open to interpretation by the layman in the vein of everybody thinking they're an boxing expert because they've seen a few fights.

People generally like to talk about the big fighters, Robinson, Ali, Dempsey, Louis, and what they don't like are bums, fighters they view inferior to their heroes, a cartoon view that pretty well zeros out the career records of every fighter in history.

A pure historian avails himself to dusty archives to delve out hidden gems. I prefer to discover readily available evidence to point to unknown strengths and weaknesses of fighters that impact their historical ratings. Ratings gyrate up and down the scale as new generations make their own ratings, so nothing is etched in stone.

I'd say to stay away from petty vendetta arguments some have about certain fighters, usually based on age, race, nationalism, ect. Some are always gonna hate a Pacquiao, Dempsey, Tyson, or Klitschko regardless.

Others are absolute gems in arcane knowledge and astute observations about the development of the sport, so keep an open mind and your perceptions about boxing will grow accordingly.

The bare knuckle era in the British Isles is enough to whet your appetites for the remainder of your life, and to think that was only the beginning of "the modern era." Alas, so much lost in history through the ages.

I agree with all of you have said LondonRingRules but my mind and eye was brought to your last point.

I think a few of us on here should help to bring back the lost reports of a bygone era and bring them into the 21st century and beyond. It has given me an idea which might interest a few people on here......

WelshDevilRob, i'm looking at you for starters mate!!!

Rob Snell is the man in the know. He has his own history site. Check the forum for artwork from old newspapers that he has posted which are available to download.

thanks for the mention its much appreciated. I do think that the idea of developing an insight into boxing venues and general history centered in the NE of the UK would be a very good area to focus upon. If i can assist in any way please ask away.

It's an interesting topic, but one has to keep a good balance between enjoying the history and becoming a slave to it. People like Rob Snell do a great job of appreciating the sports deep history but also keeping it in perspective and enjoying/appreciating todays game. I know a few IBRO members that are kind of "lost in the past" and can't give todays fighters proper credit, and I even know one sad case that doesn't even follow present day boxing, but those are the very rare exceptions. Sometimes I'll go to places like Cyberboxingzone and read for hours, for my money no other sport, not even baseball, has as rich a history as does boxing.

Rob, this is definitely an idea in which I have floated around facebook friends. Unforunately to no real avail. I did get a free boxing book out of it though!!!

It is most definitely something that I would be interested in looking at in greater detail though.

Honestly? The northeast as a whole. But could dwindle it down by the region as well and do Tyneside, Wearside, Teesside and County Durham.

I know the region has a long and enriched history and I have contacted someone who has nearly four decades of involvement in the region's boxing halls so will see how that pans out as well.
