Shaun Gardiner Interview: A Boxing Fans Perspective

Intro:

My name is Shaun and I am (nearly) 26! I was born in Essex, Rochford to be precise but I have lived in Oxfordshire for 22 years now. Mum, Dad and a sister (who got married a couple of weeks again).

Ringnews24.com: What age did you become interested in boxing and why?

4 years old. 18th November 1990 to be even more precise! It was my mum who got me in to it as well! A treat for me was staying up to watch the Saturday night fights that ITV showed. This particular fight was Eubank/Benn 1. I was captivated. It was the first time I was aware of a build up to a fight rather than just seeing two guys in a ring. The first time I had seen two fighters who really hated each other as well. I was a Eubank fan from that point forward!

Ringnews24.com: What was the first fight you ever saw (on TV) or heard live (radio)?

I honestly can't remember THE first but Eubank/Benn 1 was most definitely the one that made me a fan.

Ringnews24.com: What was the first fight you ever attended?

Shamefully, I didn't attend a pro contest until I went to Harrison/Williams at the ExCel Arena. Growing up all of my mates were football fans, like me, and we used to spend our Saturdays travelling all over the country watching Oxford United. I was a fan of Boxing, but they were more passing interest guys and going to a pro fight was never really on the cards. That said, a friend was a decent amateur who was on the fringes of the England team. When he was fighting locally we would always go to the dinner shows.

Ringnews24.com: Have you boxed and, if yes, at what level?

Again, shamefully I haven't. I have been gloved up, head guard on and gum shield in but I haven't actually had a contest. Its most definitely on the bucket list though.

Ringnews24.com: Who is your favourite fighter from the past?
