The_budweiser
Multiple sources have advised BoxingScene.com that TMT Promotions, the company formed by rapper 50 Cent and five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., have made attempts to sign Puerto Rican superstar Miguel Cotto. Since turning pro in 2001, Cotto (37-3, 30KOs) was promoted for nearly his entire career by Top Rank. His promotional agreement with Top Rank expired on December 31, 2011. He returned to action on May 5th, as a free agent, and lost a spirited twelve round decision to Mayweather at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In the last few weeks, TMT Promotions have signed super middleweight Andre Dirrell, Olympic gold medal winner Yuriorkis Gamboa, featherweight champion Celestino Caballero, super featherweight champion Billy Dibb, and have a working relationship with Zab Judah. However, they won't be getting Cotto. A source close to the situation advised BoxingScene that "there is absolutely no chance" that Cotto will sign a promotional agreement with TMT. The former three division world champion likes his position as a free agent, which gives him the ability to work with anyone, and Cotto doesn't see the necessity of being under a promotional agreement at this point in his career, said the source. Cotto is scheduled to return on December 1 at New York's Madison Square Garden. Source: Rick Reeno, BoxingScene.com
Jayme718
Fair play to Cotto, hes a big enough name now to manage himself. TMT are definitely thinking big though, im interested to see how they shape up.
Meathead
This is quite interesting. I think a lot of Boxers underestimate their worth sometimes. Cottos seen the major advantages of not having a promoter when your a star in the sport like he is.
RAZZ-MCFC
I had an idea TMT would make moves to sign Cotto but kind of expected it to go this way. Cotto is the third biggest attraction in the sport behind Floyd and Pacquiao and he really doesn't need a promoter at this stage, he may as well get the big fights, use his own promotional banner 'Miguel Cotto Promotions' and make more dollar for himself and his family. Can't knock TMT for the statements they're making though so soon after forming, can only be a good thing for boxing the moves they're making. gavpowell
I don't get why any of you are impressed just because they're trying to sign loads of people. Let's see what fights they make before we give them any credit.

The jury is still out obviously but surely they deserve credit for trying to sign the best fighters they can?

You could well be right but that's where the jury is still out, on the other hand the man management skills of TMT could turn out to be excellent. I just think for a promotional outfit that is so new on the scene, the moves they've made already can only be a good thing. And if it goes some way to challenging Top Rank then that definitely is a good thing.
gavpowell
Eh, anyone can move in and throw money around(Well, not everyone - people with money) but this is exactly how GoldenBoy got a long leash to begin with - a lot of us thought "Hey, an ex-fighter hiring other ex-fighters to run a promotional company, this is going to be a real change from the lawyers and crooks who run the sport now" and then it turns out you should never trust a man with a winning smile. I see the splashing of cash as very much a PR offensive with no substance behind it whatsoever. I'll give credit where it's due when I see how they treat their fighters and what they do with the signings they've got.
iamasadlittleboy
One thing stands out about TMT much, much more than it should...Billy Dib. What is the point behind Dib? He serves no purpose other than being a pawn but what's the game they are trying to play with him? He will never be a star, he will never be a big money attraction and, dare I say it, he will not be a champion for long, so what have they signed him for? The top Featherweights have no interest in him, or his paper crown, the top Super Featherweights are based in Japan and earn nice green by staying there...he just has no purpose... gavpowell
Is Dib not even poular in Australia? That's what I assumed was the reason. I would say Dirrell is far more toxic than Dib.

Source: Rick Reeno, BoxingScene.com ----- Cotto was already working with Golden Boy a couple of years back through his brother, the other Miguel. GB was the co-promoter in Cotto's last fight and has been working with him on the MSG date that may feature the Canelo fight everyone has been screaming for. Why go with a bunch of Don King pretender wannabes? A fighter has a short shelf life when he can make any money, and most never even make it to any kinda decent bucks at all. TMT is likely to go the same route as Floydy's filthy rich rocord company when they were kicked out of their offices for failing to pay rent. Then we have Floydy's tax problems and squad of lawyers to pay. Besides, Cotto has already advanced beyond TMT with his own promotions........duh! When TMT start staging regular fights, maybe someone but for a few Floydy idolators and lap dogs will take them seriously.

WelshDevilRob
Slightly off topic but related to Floyd. What happened to Don Kings involvement with Floyd a while back. Was he just consulting and has that ended? How much did Don make? grin//
gavpowell
The only time I've seen King and Mayweather linked is when King was supposedly trying to broker the Pacquiao fight.
Meathead
Didnt he say something along the lines of "being the only father hes ever had" and even for Mayweather, who has a less than amicable relationship with Sr. at the best of times, it was a step too far. Since then Mayweather has kept his distance from Don King.
duwdu
Just saw the following. Is TMT beginning to reach out to Latin Americans by extension? Such [targeted] gestures may eventually matter for/help with a boxing promotions business. Quote: ""VIVA JULIO" - 50 CENT NOW SPONSORING JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ JR. By Ben Thompson | August 18, 2012 Earlier today, renowned rapper, actor, entrepreneur and now boxing promoter 50 Cent announced that his energy drink, SK Energy, has become an official sponsor of undefeated WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. ahead of his upcoming September 15th title defense against middleweight king Sergio Martinez. "Viva julio is a STREETKING don't miss him sept 15 Chavez is no joke," 50 Cent would post on his official Twitter page, along with a picture of Chavez Jr. wearing an SK Energy hat. Although official details have yet to be revealed, FightHype has been informed that Chavez Jr. will be wearing an SK Energy patch on his shorts during the fight. Partnering with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), 50 Cent is on a mission to to feed one billion people. Available nationwide in hundreds of retailers, every SK Energy shot sold provides a meal to a hungry child in Africa. To date, they have funded well over 3.5 million meals. The sponsorship of Chavez Jr. through the biggest fight of his career will no doubt help increase awareness of the SK Energy cause in the Hispanic community."
