Andre Berto or Robert Guerrero Could be Next for Floyd Mayweather

Written by Rizwaan Zahid

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are not fighting each other in their next fight. I didn’t exactly break any news there but both fighters will be back before the end of the year, just not against each other.

While Bob Arum will be meeting Manny Pacquiao for a November 10th return, more people it seems are interested in Floyd Mayweather’s return over Manny’s. After all, Pacquiao’s candidates are Timothy Bradley (a rematch that shouldn’t be taking place), Juan Manuel Marquez (does anyone expect a different result?), and Miguel Cotto (another rematch, but in my opinion the most deserving of the ‘candidates’). But neither are promoted by someone either then Bob Arum, or very close to Arum which basically states what we already know.

Bob Arum doesn’t want to risk Pacquiao losing, unless it is against one of his own guys, or someone that will become one of his guys.

Simply put, there’s not a lot of suspense in Pacquiao's next opponent.

Mayweather though has a few intriguing options. Most expect Mayweather to go back down to 147, even though he looked like a junior middleweight when he was released from prison just a few days ago. Robert Guerrero has been making headlines as a guy who wants the fight. Guerrero is coming of a solid unanimous decision win against Selcuk Aydin. The difference is Guerrero is a fighter who can bring the money. And for “Money” Mayweather, that’s obviously quite important.

Guerrero has a strong following in the Bay Area. He’s Mexican-American and history shows that an entertaining Mexican-American fighter can sell tickets, especially if he’s matched with the biggest draw there is in boxing. Whether you hate or love Mayweather, the point is you’ll watch his fights.

Despite the human interest story surrounding his wife, nobody wants to see Robert Gurerro in a major fight, especially at Welterweight. How long do we have to keep hearing his name floated out to us for stuff like this before those who are pushing it get the message that we're not interested?

---- Oh, dear, another Floydy cotton candy press release.

If Manny ever considered fighting Guerrero who is a fine fighter, the howls of derision would ring around the world to rattle this board. Floydy never faced his mandatory Berto in the 2 years or so he held the WBC belt, and now he's gonna face another drug cheat who can't buy a fight?

Unlike Floydy who has been pampered through his career with a cushy HBO contract when he turned pro, and by the WBC which represented all 5 of his divisional belts until he recently fought Cotto for the WBA belt, Manny came up hard and starving in the traditional boxing way, but from a 3rd world culture that is expected to be subservient to Americans. He's already lost and doesn't need Joe Cortez or Steele diapering him in the ring to protect his perfect record.

Aside from the fact that Manny has fought more than double the Ring P4Pers than Floydy has, since moving to the welter division he fought the two biggest Golden Boy fighters at the time, Oscar and Ricky, 4 Arum fighters, Cotto, Clottey, Marg, and Bradley, and two former Golden Boy free agents, Marquez and Mosley that GB held options on but refused to match the TR offer.

In that time Floydy has faced 3 Goldenboy fighters, Marquez, Mosley, and Ortiz, and one TR free agent, Cotto who had his own promotional company that has 20x the number of promotions that the Floydy promotions has.

We know who's really scared of losing, and it ain't Manny.

Really, now, is Floydy even gonna fight if 50 cent can't get his license? Who knows, but Berto and Guerrero ain't the intriguing fights, count on it.

Berto was a mandatory for 2 years? How does that work?

Berto loses WBC title 2011-04-16 Berto wins IBF title less than 5 months later (2011-09-03)...unless you somehow think he was a mandatory in 2006...

Also...Berto himself avoided his own mandatory as WBC champion...

This is an original article by our old friend Riz, from BoxingBanter rather than a promotional press release.

There was so much craziness the day he was released. Facebook and boxing websites alike were flooded with threads and photos of his release with people saying they cannot wait for him to be back in the ring and that he is this "God of boxing".....and he may fight Guerrero or Berto? Bloody hell. I mean, I know Guerrero has made his mark at WW now but he's just as bad of an opponent as Manny facing Cotto again.

Handicap match? Mayweather will still probably win boxing//

Haha, exactly what I thought when I saw the topic headline! mlol/

Berto AND Guerrero...could end up like a WWE wrestling match with fake chairs and tables becoming involved...and a celebrity referee - Manny Pacquiao, who joins in when Floyd's beating the pair of them! mlol/

Did the Aydin win even do that much? IMO he "made his mark" against a guy who wasn't exactly a giant at 147 himself. To me Guerrero is still a lightweight who's operating two weight classes above his best. Instead of calling for the megapaydays with the two Superstars that'll never happen, he ought to drop down to 140 where there's a host of good options for him.

----- Berto's record is so beside the point that it should be self explanatory.

Mandatory/#1, no matter how you split it, Berto was the fast tracked top WBC guy before he ever won his title eliminator. Floydy made his only defense against Hatton. Floydy's title was finally made available 2 years after he won it from Baldy to Berto as the Hayman heir apparent to Floydy.

I couldn't agree more on Berto. Even when he was just turning pro after representing Haiti in the Olympics, he was being targeted for one of the top spots and his career was tailored to that hype. Bumps along the road meant nothing to the HBO hype-machine, and now here we are with a so-called Elite fighter that's been overpaid every step of the way and Hayman can't even move him now because nobodies really interested since he got exposed. Frankly, I haven't missed him much and don't spend a whole lot of time worrying about his current condition vis-a-vis flunking his test. He got more attention than he deserved, now it's over.....too bad.
